R-C Sports Notebook: Rivalry has become more family-friendly

There was a period of time a couple years back where it seemed every time teams from Carson and Douglas High School met up, there was at least one incident I'd end up writing about the following week - usually in this column.

Thanks for toys

It was difficult to tell if it was Christmas or January last week when a van-load of amazing toys arrived at Family Support Council from the Carson Valley Inn. There were games, tons of books, big blocks for little fingers, shelves made especially for tykes and other wonderful play things previously used in the CVI's Kid's Fun Center.

Motocross a great sport

I read the article on Jan. 8 about the local motocross facility and it infuriated me so much I had to respond. I'm of the impression that the person who wrote this article has nothing better to do with their time than complain about every little thing that they don't happen to like.

A woman's kindness

On Jan. 14, I was accosted in the beautiful Minden Park a block from my home. I had been visiting this park daily for over a year-and-a-half. Many divergent peoples gathered there, from teen-aged rompers to elderly men with canes. Standing out in my mind now is the woman runner who, when witnessing the violent outburst of this man's voice and the subsequent physical attack he perpetrated upon me, kept on running, yelling out her disapproval to him.

Some household tasks are better trusted to experts

I jumped out of the shower and noticed I had cobwebs on my ceiling vent in the master bathroom. Wait a minute; I am supposed to be an excellent housekeeper. A quick trip to the local hardware store and $90 later, I had myself a beautiful new ceiling fixture. It came complete with a fan, a heater and a light. Actually it looked just like the old one, but new and white instead of yellow. The thing that irritated me the most was how yellow the old plastic had become.

New Year presents plenty of challenges

Carson Valley and Douglas County will face many challenges during the next year.

Pit bulls a problem

Does anyone realize all the problems shelter-obtained animals cause when brought into suburbia? These elementary children are sadly naive; they don't understand that a neighborhood's peace and quiet is often ruined by the introduction of surplus animals. These kids have on rose-colored glasses; all they want to do is pet the puppy, and give it a blanket.

Why lay off loyal workers?

I do not understand why these new owners are laying off loyal employees with years in with the Carson Valley Inn then hiring someone else to replace them. Why? If they had not been doing a good job they would not still be employed.

Playing Scrooge

The topic of my letter is simple. The new owners of Carson Valley Inn are acting in a manner counter to good business practices and are treating the citizens of your community in a manner usually held for livestock and slaves. The company is firing employees three days before Christmas and, in at least one case, are notifying them via voice-mails on their home answering machines.
