Melodrama performed this week

Melodrama performances start tonight and run through Sunday. But don't plan to go unless you already have tickets. We've been sold out for weeks.

The Douglas County Historical Society's January photo contest ends this weekend as well. Your entry needs to be a photo of whatever you think of when you think about January in Douglas County. Snow, rain, ice, whatever it is, either bring a photo to the Gardnerville museum or e-mail it to the address below. Make sure we have your entry by 4 p.m. Saturday. The winner will be announced next week.

Remember that even if your photo doesn't win, it may be chosen to be on the cover of a set of note cards in our Main Street Bookstore. If you need note cards, stop by and pick up some of ours. You'll be sending your friends professional quality note cards with photos of our beautiful valley on the covers. Send snow scenes to your friends in warmer climates to show them how beautiful winter can be in Northern Nevada.

Saturday, Feb. 6, is Student-Senior Day. Although no special events have been planned for this Saturday, the museum is still open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free for all seniors and all students accompanied by an adult, unless the student is an adult. Museum tours are available as well as self-guided tours. This is your chance to come learn about Douglas County history without an admission charge.

The Endowment Funding Seminar for anyone interested in estate planning is 7 p.m. Feb. 10. Specialist Dick Stoelzing explains wealth transfer and preservation strategies including estate tax, income tax, charitable and non-tax planning issues. He explains the importance of endowment funding. This seminar is open to the public, but seating is limited. Call Cindy at 782-2555 to reserve seats for you and your guests.

Next in the historical society's lecture series on Feb. 11 is former Nevada State Archivist Guy Rocha, whose topic is "When the Rich and Famous Came to Douglas County and Carson City to Tie and Untie the Knot." The lecture starts at 7 p.m. and is free to DCHS members, $3 for non-members.

The March 5 deadline for entries into this year's Women in History Project is rapidly approaching. Any woman, alive or dead, may be entered as long as she has lived in Douglas County at some point in her life and has contributed to the quality of life here. Nominating packets are available at the main desk in the Gardnerville museum or by calling 782-2555 and requesting one.

For questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
