Wrestling: Tigers clean up at Alhambra

Three was the key word for the Douglas wrestling team over the weekend.

The Tigers wrapped up three individual titles at the Alhambra Invitational in Martinez, Calif., over the weekend.

That, coupled with a number of other strong performances from Tiger wrestlers, gave the team a third-place finish at the 20-team tournament.

And junior 125-pounder Dillon Spates claimed an individual title at the tournament for the third consecutive year.

Michael Sepulveda (130 pounds) won the title in his class as well, and was named the tournament's Outstanding Lightweight Wrestler.

Senior Wes Peterson, competing in the 119-pound class, claimed the Tigers' other individual title of the day.

Cody Spates took third in the 140-pound class, Kyle Mathews was third in the 160-pound class, Patrick Miller was fourth in the heavyweight class and Zach Falanga

was fifth in the 189-pound class.

The third-place team finish was made even more impressive for the Tigers considering they only had 10 wrestlers competing at the event - seven of whom placed.

The Tigers are scheduled to travel to South Tahoe for a Sierra League dual match at 6 p.m. tonight, pending the weather.

They travel to Fernley for a tournament this Friday and Saturday before heading to Carson for a dual match against their rival Jan. 27.
