New grippers make walking on ice safer

As I told you in my last column, I fell on some ice before Christmas. I was just so very fortunate that I didn't break any bones or do permanent damage.

Since that time, I have been made aware of Yaktrax. These are coil grippers that slip over the soles of your shoes for walking in snow or ice. I was even given a set of them by someone wanting to help me in the future.

All I can tell you after using them is that they are really great and a big help this time of year, especially with the weather we have had.

I checked around after getting my pair and found that they are available on the Internet, as well as at Big 5 Sporting Goods in Minden.

If you need safety and solid footing, I would sure recommend Yaktrax.

Jason Peters has another honor

In the post-season awards, Jason Peters was named to the All-Sierra Nevada football team. He is now the state's all-time leader in almost every category, including passing yards and passing touchdowns. Congratulations again, Jason. We wish you much success at college level sports.

Planning committee meets

Topaz Lake fishing season open

Jan. 1 was the first day of the fishing season at Topaz Lake that extends through April 11. If you catch a tagged fish, you will be in a season-ending drawing for $500 cash.

Also, any fish weighing 2 pounds or more will entitle you to $5 free slot play in the casino. Head on over to the lake and give it a try.

I hope everyone had a safe and happy New Year's holiday. We'll also hope this year will be more successful and prosperous for all of us.
