Nevada AG rejects Gibbons' request for ruling

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto is rejecting Gov. Jim Gibbons' request for an immediate ruling on the constitutionality of the U.S. Senate's health care bill.

In a statement, Masto said she has been monitoring the legislation and been in contact with other state attorney general offices about the issue.

But she says any legal action challenging the constitutionality of the legislation can only take place once the legislation passes both houses of Congress and becomes law.

The Democratic-controlled Senate passed health care legislation on Dec. 24, clearing the way for compromise talks with the House on a bill to reduce the ranks of the uninsured and rein in the insurance industry.

Gibbons has criticized the legislation crafted by Nevada Sen. Harry Reid.
