Nominations open for Women in History project

We have a winner in the Douglas County Historical Society's December photo contest. Congratulations to Margaret Olesen for her great photo of the Hemsath house right here in town. This photo will represent December in the 2011 calendar.

Speaking of calendars, you can still get your copy of the DCHS 2010 calendar at the Gardnerville museum. Come get your copy and support your local museums and our local photographers. You can enter the January photo contest any time this month by submitting a photo of what January looks like in Douglas County. Deadline for entries is 4 p.m. Jan. 30.

The winners of the 13th annual Gallery of Trees contest have also been announced. First place went to Douglas County Republican Women for "Let Freedom Ring." Second place went to Douglas County Democratic Women for "Back in the Saddle Again" and third place to High Sierra Flycasters for "A Reel Christmas Tree." Our congratulations and thanks to everyone who entered.

There is great news regarding our upcoming melodrama. Tickets are selling fast. So, better plan when you want to see this spoof and get your tickets soon. We will sell out. Last year we sold out two weeks before the first performance. That leaves you about 10 days to get a ticket or miss it. You can order by calling 782-2555 to charge tickets to your credit card.

The first meeting for Young Chautauqua is Tuesday. The program offers an opportunity for children to learn history and experience the performing arts. All kids in grades four to 12 are eligible to participate. The program meets 6-7 p.m. every other Tuesday. The Young Chautauquans will be available to perform in the community beginning in May. Final performances for everyone are 5 p.m. June 16 and 17 at Mormon Station State Historic Park in Genoa.

Nominations are due by March 4 for Women in History Project. Nominating packets are available at the Gardnerville museum or by calling 782-2555. Your choice of nominee should be a woman, living or deceased, who lives or has lived in Douglas County and has contributed to the quality of life here. Those women chosen will be honored at a public reception March 20.

For questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
