Probation? Really?

EDITOR:

There is something seriously wrong with our judicial system. How is it that a woman can strike a pedestrian with her vehicle, leave the scene of the accident, and only get probation?

Yes, I am sure she is (now) remorseful and very sorry that this happened. That does not change anything for the victim. I do not know either of these individuals personally, but I can certainly relate to the pain that the victim has had to, and continues to, endure. There is no excuse for this woman to not face any jail time.

What kind of example is Judge Gamble setting for the rest of the community? Certainly, not a good one. Is he telling people that it is all right to strike someone with your vehicle and leave the scene of the crime? Is he telling our young drivers out there that you face no consequences for hitting a pedestrian and leaving that person to die in the middle of the road? That sure is what it sounds like to me.

The lack of punishment is ridiculous and inexcusable. The driver should be in jail, end of story.
