Tumbleweeds starts youth and teen fitness program

After the recent success of its Family Fun and Fit Day, Tumbleweeds Gymnastics in Minden, along with Kaia F.I.T. (formerly Moxy Fitness) has decided to branch out with a youth and teen fitness program call Kx.

The new program is an unconventional co-ed sports training class for ages 8 through 18 that meets twice a week. It will be geared toward children of all fitness levels and will include cross-training for young athletes for all sports. It is designed to improve strength, agility, coordination, flexibility and overall fitness level.

"With obesity at an all-time high, we need to get kids moving and have fun doing it," Tumbleweeds owner Nikki Warren said. "Studies show that one out of every four children are overweight and that two-thirds of American children between the ages of 6 and 17 cannot pass a basic fitness test.

"It's also proven that physically fit kids have higher academic acheivements, as well as improved concentration skills and better classroom behavior. We want to fight against these statistics and help Carson Valley families get fit, healthy and have fun doing it."

Tumbleweeds and Kaia F.I.T. recently held a Family Fun and Fit Day. The turnout helped spur on the idea for the Kx program.

"It felt like the entire community was there," Warren said. "We had hundreds of families lining up to test their fitness levels.

"Families from all over the Valley and surrounding communities didn't just come to play but to work out as well.

"With lots of laughs and encouragement, we had fun doing pull-ups, push-ups, planks, plyometrics, jumping on trampolines and doing shuttle runs. The rest of the family enjoyed playing in the castle, swinging on the bars and much more."

As an introduction to the Kx program, Tumbleweeds will be hosting two free trial classes during the last week of January. Anyone interested can call the gym to reserve a spot.

In addition to the Kx class, Tumbleweeds offers a women's only fitness program, gymnastics classes for ages 0 to 18, a ski and snowboard training class and a cheer class.

"We also have many scholarships available, so if you or anyone you know would benefit from any of our programs but may not be able to afford it, call the office and let us help," Warren said.
