Football: 49ers stadium proposal appears headed for ballot

SANTA CLARA, CALIF. - Supporters of a proposal to build a new football stadium for the San Francisco 49ers in Santa Clara appear to have gathered enough signatures to put the issue before city voters in June.

The group, Santa Clarans for Economic Progress, which has been working closely with the 49ers, delivered a petition Tuesday to Santa Clara City Hall with more than 8,000 signatures. That's considerably more than the roughly 7,000 needed to put the $937 million stadium measure on the June 8 special election ballot.

The county's registrar of voters now has 30 days to verify that the signatures are of registered Santa Clara voters.

If the petition is deemed invalid, the city council can still decide to place the stadium measure on the ballot on its own. It would have until a March 9 council meeting to make that decision.
