Don't make us pay against our convictions

EDITOR:

An open letter to our House of Representatives, on abortion funding in the pending health care act.

According to Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., the legislative language revealed by Majority Leader Harry Reid late last week radically changes the status quo and sets the tragic precedent of providing federal funding for abortion.

Do not promote or pass any legislation that will in any way cause us taxpayers, by the very act of performing our civic responsibilities of paying taxes, to go against our deepest moral convictions. Do not promote or pass any provision that in any way supports the killing of the most vulnerable members of humanity, abortion. No rational human being who has honestly studied the facts can possibly believe it is the right thing to do?

I've heard all of the arguments used to justify the pro-abortion position, but none of them address the most basic reason for the existence of civilization, to protect its members from hostile assault from without and within.

Some say that an embryo is not a human being. These people are either ignorant or lying to themselves. Science has proved that at the moment of conception when a human sperm enters a human egg an entirely new human being is created. This new person, though in the earliest stage of his or her growth is fully equipped with a totally unique DNA of his or her own. This DNA is not that of a dog, or a cat, or a monkey, but of a human person. It contains the very blueprint that determines his or her race, body type, color of hair, his or her very being.

Some say that a woman has the right to choose what happens to her body. I believe that, but I also believe that along with that right she must take responsibility for the choice she makes. When a woman chooses to give her body to a man in a sexual relationship she must take responsibility for the natural result of that choice, the creation of another human being. She is not the only responsible person however, the man who also made the choice is equally accountable for the care and nurturing of the child that has been created through their union.

I believe that as a society we need to do what we can to provide a safe community for all citizens, including access to quality medical health care. I don't agree with all of the proposals, however I am willing to live with whatever it takes to reach the goal of providing adequate health care to all in need. The one thing I can not live with is being forced to contribute to what I believe is a conspiracy to commit murder. If provisions are not made to prevent the use of public funds to facilitate the killing of innocent persons through abortion, I will consider myself and all others who believe as I do unwittingly guilty of such a crime.
