Boys' Basketball: Douglas boys split opening two at Clovis

The Douglas boys basketball team was able to overcome a tough trip over the mountains and a poor first half for a comeback 69-59 win over North Bakersfield, Calif., on Wednesday in the Clovis Christmas Tournament.

A gift to my aunt

On Dec. 17, 1988, a tragic car accident happened that was to change the lives of the Savage family. Susan Savage, then 5 years old, lost her grandmother, Jane Savage, when her grandmother was only 43.

Holiday cheer abounds at Scarselli Elementary

The staff at Scarselli Elementary School spread some cheer to students on the last day before winter vacation. Groups of teachers from each grade level, along with office and support staff, put on a special holiday skit to help celebrate the season.

Year in Review 2006

Perhaps what most marked 2006 in the arts community was the arrival on the scene of a second theater group in Carson Valley, the Dakota Organization. With its introduction, there are now two thriving theater organizations in Douglas County.

Looking back at 2006

It was an election year, political issues such as growth, the airport and taxes were big issues in 2006. The year started out with a flood that closed nearly every bridge crossing the Carson River. Also in January, Minden industrialist Don Bently unveiled his biofuels plant that converts restaurant grease into diesel fuel.

'Barrels of thanks' from food closet

Barrels of thanks go out to the Carson Valley community for their support of holiday food drives and barrels throughout town. How fortunate we are to live in a community where everyone gets in the act to display the true spirit of Christmas. Everyone from the Boy Scouts, Douglas Disposal, KTVN Channel 2, the Carson Valley Inn and local businesses participated in the success.

Memories of a 20-below New Year's

Last week I wrote about two deer, a doe and her fawn, that came up to our snow-covered deck and looked right into the large glass slider door on Christmas Eve 10 years ago. They watched us as we watched them. The next morning my husband and I and our little kitten followed the deer tracks through the deep snow in our orchard and up to the top of the BLM hill behind our house and then south along the ridge top. From there the tracks came down through Juniper Canyon.

Obituaries

Edward Lee Stewart, 88, died Dec. 21, 2006, of natural causes at his home. He was a resident of Ninilchik, Alaska.

Redevelopmentnot going away

Wish as we might, that county commissioners could take back Thursday's vote on a $24.7 million redevelopment deal, we know that they can't. Only a judge can stop the agreement from going forward now.

My thanks to everyone

In April of this year, The Record-Courier ran an article stating that they were looking for someone to take over writing this column. A friend of ours called me and said that I should do it. I had never done, nor thought of doing, something like this. It was a scary thought, but I applied. It has been difficult, fun, and rewarding, all at the same time.

Coalition offers plan for airport weight ordinance resolution

Commissioners Doug Johnson and Jim Baushke are proposing a prior permission required test that would raise the aircraft weight limit at the airport from the current 50,000 pounds to 110,000 pounds for a one-year test period during 2007. Under this program overweight aircraft that wish to use our airport may easily do so by simply obtaining prior permission.

Local fiber artist added at Artisans International

Paula Chung is a fiber artist who has been perfecting her craft for the past several years. She has been in numerous exhibits in Southern California and the Lake Tahoe area and received several awards for her work.

Kudos to Thrivent

Douglas County Historical Society is most grateful for the many volunteer cookie bakers from the society and those members of Thrivent for baking and decorating hundreds of dozens of Christmas cookies for the 10th annual Holiday Gala Cookie Walk. Cookies were sold in new paint cans donated by Dick's Fuller paints, then decorated and trimmed with beads and bows.

Rehearsals for Carson City Symphony February concert begin Wednesday

The Carson City Symphony, conducted by David Bugli, will begin rehearsals on Wednesday, at 7:15 p.m., in the Carson High School band room, 1111 N. Saliman Road, Carson City. The rehearsals are for a performance on Feb. 25 at the Carson City Community Center.

Matthew Bates, son of Robin and Vicki Bates of Gardnerville and Pamela Genio, daughter of Lemuel and Margarita Genio of Reno were married, Aug. 6 in Genoa.

Gingerbread winners announced

Carson Valley folks got in the holiday spirit for the second year in a row, and submitted their entries into the Carson Valley Arts Council Gingerbread Contest. The results are in for the contest that took place Dec. 16 at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center.

Packed crowds for Genoa concert

David John and the Comstock Cowboys perform at the Genoa Town Hall Saturday for the Christmas in the Sierra concerts. The band performed to packed crowds for both performances. What's great about a supermajority?

On Tuesday, Douglas County planning commissioners met to discuss the 10-year update of the master plan. In order to approve the update, at least five of the seven planning commissioners must vote for it. That's called a supermajority and is required of the planning commission to approve any master plan amendment.

Antiques show and sale coming in January

The annual Genoa Antiques Show and Sale, hosted by Martha Williams, will be held Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 13-14, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. This is the 14th year for this show, which is held at the Town Hall in the center of Genoa.

East Fork Fire Cadets make community safer

East Fork Fire and Paramedic District Cadets recently conducted a routine life safety inspection training at the Silver Strike Lanes. Although this was just a training inspection, cadets inspected the facility for fire and life safety concerns under the direction of East Fork Fire Inspector Marilie Smith.

Standing room only at St. Gall

Saturday night my husband and I enjoyed a night out at St. Gall Catholic Church for the "Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe" dinner. It was so wonderful. They served pork verde, enchiladas, tortillas, rice and beans. It was delicious. To entertain us there was a mariachi band, Aztec dancers and other performers. I estimated a thousand people showed up for the dinner - it was standing-room only. Write it on your calendar for next year, it's one you won't want to miss.

25 gingerbread houses featured at museum reception Saturday

The Carson Valley Arts Council is hosting an artists' reception for the exhibitors participating in the annual Gingerbread House Decorating Contest. The reception will be held on 2-3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center, 1477 Highway 395 in Gardnerville. Twenty-five gingerbread Houses are on display. Museum admission fee is $3.

Wrestling: Tigers take Natumas crown

For the Douglas High School wrestling team, not having wrestlers in the two heaviest classes at the Natumas Nighthawk Dual Tournament in Sacramento Saturday wasn't a problem.

A.G. Reed, jr., HB, Oxford Cavaliers, England: The first half of the British Collegiate American Football League ended Sunday. Oxford resumes second half play against the Royal Holloway Vikings in February, The Cavaliers are 2-2 on the year, one game behind the Birmingham Lions in the Central conference of the Southern Division of the BCAFL. Reed had a 40-yard run against Portsmouth earlier in the year.

Giving tree benefits City of Refuge

People traditionally consider December to be a time for giving and a group of local Arbonne independent consultants is no exception. Wednesday, more than 20 Arbonne consultants and guests gathered at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada in Carson City for a Christmas party and giving tree. This year's beneficiary was the City of Refuge in Gardnerville.

After letting Laguna Creek slip out to a 10-2 lead Saturday afternoon, Douglas boys' basketball coach Rob Streeter called a time out and sent his team back out on the floor for what would end up being the Tigers' finest defensive performance so far this year.

Remembering that first day out on skis

'Tis the season. The sun gets up late. The air stays cold. Feeding from the back of the pickup you see large white frost crystals sparkling on the cows' eyelashes and nose whiskers. To enter a field you need to hold your bare hand around the metal gate clasp. The sharp bite in your palm unlocks the frost enough to slide the bolt back to open a gate. Time to wean the calves.

Community backs Fish Springs master plan

There were two community meetings for Fish Springs residents last week and both were very well attended. On Monday evening, Dec. 4, about 70 people met in the firehouse to discuss the master plan amendments in Fish Springs. The community gathered together and voiced their opinion against a proposed master plan zoning change that would increase the density of Fish Springs.

4-H Teen Institute makes strides

In the 4-H Teen Institute, local teens do community service projects, learn leadership skills and build self character. In the past two months, the Teen Institute has done a number of community service projects. In October we attended the Carson River Snapshot Day.

Monica Knight, fr., Hofstra: Hofstra beat Cornell in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and lost to No. 5 Penn State in the second round. The Pride ended its season with a 24-7 record. Knight played in 19 games this season and had eight kills, nine digs and three blocks.

Chautauqua set to begin

The new season of Chautauqua begins in January. Funded in part by Nevada Humanities, an informational meeting will be 7 p.m. Jan. 9 at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center, 1477 Highway 395, Gardnerville. What's the 20-year goal for Douglas County?

In order to plan, one needs to have a goal. It is the essence of good planning. I have not heard that community development has stated a 20-year goal. Perhaps that would be detrimental to their plans for rapid growth. A goal should have been expressed when they employed the consultants Design Workshops. If not, why not? If it was, what was the stated goal?

Support council hopes to give families a 'Story Book' Christmas

The Family Support Council, in response to residents and businesses wanting to help families in need through the holidays, have come up with a project they have called Holiday Story Book. This project will focus on the basic needs of families and seniors such as gas vouchers, grocery store vouchers, utility assistance and car repair.
