JV/Frosh: JV girls take 3rd at North Valleys

The Douglas junior varsity girls' basketball team suffered its first setback of the year Saturday, losing to Lassen in the first round of the North Valleys Winter Classic.

After a slow start, managing just 10 points in the first half, Douglas roared back and pulled within four points several times in the second.

With a minute and a half left, the cut the deficit to 32-30, but couldn't get any closer as Lassen pulled away with a 34-30 win.

"It wasn't a bad first half, we just couldn't get our shots to drop," Douglas coach Dave Pfaffenberger said. "Lassen is a good team. They are well-coached and gave us some trouble with their point guard's speed and scoring ability."

The Tigers fought back in the second half, sparked by five of Maci Pfaffenberger's seven points and six points from Ally Freitas.

Freitas led Douglas with eight points. Melissa Brown had six points.

In the third place game, Douglas met a familiar opponent in the Carson Senators and won 46-32.

Carson dropped their semifinal game to Reno earlier in the day.

Douglas jumped out to a 23-19 lead at halftime. While not a comfortable lead, the girls got into their scoring mode when Freitas scored eight points in the first quarter and Pfaffenberger buried a pair of 3-pointers in the second.

The Lady Tigers used a tough full-court press in the second half and pulled away in the fourth quarter, holding Carson to only four points in the final period.

Freitas again led the scoring with 12 points and Megan Michitarian and Pfaffenberger each had eight.

Helen Fillmore put up seven points and Jaclyn Naddenreip and Brown each had four.

Michitarian was named to the all-tournament team.

"Her consistent play throughout the tournament was outstanding," Pfaffenberger said. "She provided outstanding defensive plays with her rebounds and steals and had 32 points in the four-game tournament."

Thursday night, Douglas opened with an impressive win over Truckee, 41-25.

Michitarian scored 12 points and Fillmore, Neddenreip and Brown each scored five.

Edna Meza had a solid first half with several steals and several big hustle plays on defense.

Douglas followed that with a big win over Fallon on Friday.

Freitas led all scorers with 16 points, Michitarian had 10 and Neddenreip had seven.

Douglas is now 4-1 on the year. The Tigers took on Galena in Reno Tuesday night.

FRESHMAN BOYS

Douglas avenged its lone loss of the season with a big 48-13 win at Galena Thursday night.

"Our defense was suffocating," Douglas coach J.P. Albert said. "I don't know if Galena was able to even get the ball inside for the first six minutes of the game."

The Tigers built an 18-8 lead through the first half and outscored the Grizzlies 30-5 in the second.

Douglas held the rebounding advantage by at least 15.

Defensively, the Tigers were led by Junior Pacheco, Chris Schonian and C.J. Marcotte.

Michael Whalin and Brett Anderson each played well and Albert noted Luis Pina for his efforts.

He also said Daniel Brady, Brett Hartley, Beau Battista, Danny King, Conner Gallego and Stanley Running Wolf played well.
