Wrestling: Douglas tops South Tahoe

Although only nine matches were contested Wednesday night, the Douglas wrestling team still held the advantage, taking a 57-15 win over South Tahoe in Minden.

The Tigers took four forfeit victories (Garrett Hekhuis, 112 pounds; Nico Barker, 125; Nick Ceglia, 145; and DeCee Simpson, 171) and won six of the contested bouts to cruise to the win.

Ryan Olsen (119), Cody Spates (130), Joe Ramos (135) and Devin Barker (140) recorded pins in Douglas' first four matches of the evening and Jake Williams (160) had Douglas' final win of the night with an 11-6 decision. 215-pounder Sean Molina also had a pin for the Tigers.

Olsen opened with a quick takedown in the first match of the night against Tahoe's Myles Lopez.

He followed with a near fall in the second round, a reversal in the third and finished off the match with a pin at 4:59.

Spates also came out quickly against DJ Slater, scoring a takedown and a near fall before completing the pin at 1:11 in the first round.

Ramos was only a few seconds slower, recording his pin against Paul Hubbell in 1:23.

Barker had a takedown and a near fall in the first round before wrapping his match up with a pin at 3:36 to put Douglas up 36-0 early on.

Ceglia's forfeit win pushed the score to 40-0 before South Tahoe's Elliott Pekar was able to record a win in the 152-pound class against Douglas' Adam Campbell, who was seeing his first varsity action.

Campbell was wrestling in place of Ryan Pruitt, who injured his neck over the weekend at the Lowry Invitational.

Tahoe was originally expected to forfeit the 160 class to Williams, but decided to pit Anthony Barton against him in the class.

Williams pushed ahead for the decision, mostly on takedowns and reversals while Barton picked up the majority of his points from escapes.

The matchup of the evening was between Tony Ferris and Miles Wallace in the 189-pound class.

Ferris was 3-0 with two pins in league action for Douglas heading into Wednesday night and Wallace had just finished runner-up to Molina at the Lowry Invitational over the weekend.

The two battled to a scoreless tie through the first round but Wallace managed a takedown in the second round, pushing the score to 2-0.

In the third, Ferris managed a late escape to narrow the score at 2-1, but a Wallace finished the match up with a takedown and Ferris was penalized a point for stalling, giving Tahoe the 5-1 win.

Molina followed with a pin in 2:30.

South Tahoe won the final two matches of the evening in the heavyweight and 103-pound class.

Douglas improved to 12-1 overall and 3-1 in Sierra League action on the year.

The Tigers get the weekend off before competing in the prestigious Sierra Nevada Classic next week.
