The Douglas High boys basketball team took command in the second half on its way to a 67-49 win over Manogue for the title at the South Tahoe Tournament on Saturday.
Douglas (3-0) was outscored 12-5 in the second quarter as the Miners took a 27-24 halftime lead. But the Tigers scored on their first two possessions of the second half to take the lead for good. The Tigers went on to outscore Manogue 18-6 in the third quarter and 43-22 in the second half.
Michael Gransbery scored 20 points, Keith Olson had 17 points and James McLaughlin added 14 points.
Tiger coach Rob Streeter said Gransbery's defense in the third quarter was a key to the game's turnaround. While no all-tournament team was chosen, Streeter said Gransbery could have been selected as the event's Most Valuable Player.
"He really sparked us in the third quarter," Streeter said. "He had an outstanding tournament. He just played well. Joe Nady (also) had a very good weekend,"
In its three victories, Douglas was able to contain two high tempo teams in Sacramento power El Camino and Soquel of Santa Cruz, Calif. Douglas held El Camino to 63 points and Soquel, a team that was averaging 94 points, to 53.
"We like our defensive effort so far," Streeter said. "We've still got a long ways to go.
"The tournament gave insight on things we need to clean up. It was a great way to start the year."
