Douglas Fire Safe Councils receive $81,000

This year more than 1.3 million acres burned in Nevada. Grants provided to individual chapters of the Fire Safe Council are designed to help reduce the amount of fuel around communities.

Genoa Chapter

A grant of $14,000 was provided to the chapter for a community biomass removal project and construction of a fuel break on the west side of the community. The community involved fuels-removal project generated approximately 75 tons of community biomass.

Holbrook Chapter

The Holbrook community chapter received a $45,000 grant for hand crew and mastication work to establish a west-side fuel break and create defensible space around several homes. A total of 25 acres were treated. A portion of the budget will be used for a spring community biomass removal project.

"Fuels reduction has been a priority since 2005 when the statewide risk assessment rated Holbrook as a high risk area," said Janice Roberts, Holbrook Fire Safe Chapter leader.

Spring Valley Chapter

A grant for $22,000 was provided for the installation of a water storage tank within the community. A 10,000-gallon water storage tank was installed with the cooperation of the East Fork Fire District. The approximate cost for the tank installation was $14,000. The remaining grant funding will be used for a community biomass removal project in the spring of 2007.
