Douglas Disposal delivers

Douglas Disposal made sure all 9,260 pounds of donated food were delivered promptly to the Carson Valley Community Food Closet. The successful holiday food drive was the result of Douglas Disposal customers who contributed bags of groceries during last week's pick-up. All over the county, drivers retrieved the food goods along with the weekly trash pick-up. The trucks served dual purposes that week with double duty for the employees.

Boomer Schultz coordinated the team effort with route drivers and employees. A big thanks goes out to all DDI employees and customers for their generous response. Groceries were sorted at the food closet and ready for distribution the week before Christmas. Many appreciative families will be adding this food to their own tables to serve over the holidays.

The food closet also wishes to thank everyone at Douglas Disposal for the success of the drive. This demonstrates what a community working together can do to help families and individuals in need. If you missed out on contributing, your food donations can be accepted directly at the food closet at 1255 Waterloo Lane in Gardnerville on Monday through Wednesday and Friday from 1-4 p.m. The food closet welcomes your donations throughout the year. You did it! You topped your donations from last year. The Channel 2 "Share Your Holiday" Food Drive held on Dec. 15 brought in 34,309 pounds of food and $21,893 in monetary donations, all to support the Carson Valley Community Food Closet.

It was an amazing day that would not have been possible without our sponsor KTVN Channel 2 and our host for the past seven years the Carson Valley Inn. We also appreciated having KBUL 98 FM radio with us once again to give us music on site and to help bring the people to the food drive.

There was excitement throughout the day with the help of all of those who entertained or made special presentations: Relaxed Fit - Men's Quartet, Minden Village, Sunshine and Rainbows Daycare, Sunflower Learning Center, The Carson Valley Lions Club with Dolly's Llamas, Care Flight (Santa), Carson Valley United Methodist Church Carolers, The Kiwanis Club of Carson Valley, Sierra Nevada Trading Company, Douglas Disposal, Bell Cases - Carson Valley United Methodist Church Youth Bell Choir, Douglas High School Jazz Cats jazz band, Piñon Hills Elementary School, Carson Valley Sertoma Club, Stodick Estates, Tumbleweeds - gymnastics demonstration, Shift - Carson Valley United Methodist Church Youth Band, Helping Hands Thrift Shop, East Fork Fire & Paramedics District equipment throughout the day and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office equipment throughout the day.

We also need to thank all of the volunteers who gave of their time (some were there for 14 hours), talents and muscles: Douglas County Sheriff's Mounted Posse, The Nevada State Prisons Correctional Officers, Upward Bound - UNR pre college students, students from the Douglas High School Service to Humanity class, EFFPD Cadets, the Lions, Kiwanis, Sertoma, food closet volunteers and anyone that I may not have mentioned.

Special thanks to those who donated food to the volunteers: the Carson Valley Inn, Pizza Barn, Gil Goode (BBQ tri-tip cooked on site) and a wonderful woman who brought homemade cupcakes.

An extra special thank you to the Douglas County Sheriff's Protective Association who have supplied candy canes seven years in a row and Dan and Sandie Morris for the dog biscuits.

Our hearts were warmed by the generous giving during the day, but our hands and other extremities were warmed by the propane heaters donated by United Rentals for the past seven years.

Thank you to all who made this the most incredible food drive the Carson Valley has ever seen.
