School calendar up for approval

As a result of the feedback by parents, principals and teachers at the Dec. 12 school board meeting, Director of Business Services Rich Alexander and the calendar committee were directed to review the input and come up with a recommendation for the 2007-2008 Douglas County School District calendar.

The goal is that a consensus will be reached at the special meeting held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Administrative Services Building so the committee will have a calendar to present to the school board at the Jan. 9 meeting.

At the last school board meeting, the calendar committee recommended a school year with one and two week spring breaks. The two separate spring break versions, with different calendars for secondary and primary schools, were presented and discussed.

There were concerns with the amount and length of vacation periods as well as the dates that the school year started and ended.

Some teachers recommended longer vacation periods to refresh themselves while others said students seem to forget what they learn during long summer breaks. Other comments have been e-mailed to Alexander during the holiday break and more comments are expected at Wednesday's meeting. Since going through a calendar restructuring process has proved to be an arduous task, Alexander will recommend at the Jan. 9 regular meeting that the school board adopt a calendar for five years.
