LV Aces to complete quake-suspended game

LAS VEGAS — The Las Vegas Aces and Washington Mystics’ game that was suspended by an earthquake earlier this month will be finished on Aug. 5, the WNBA announced Monday. The teams will play at T-Mobile Arena instead of the Aces’ normal home at Mandalay Bay because that venue isn’t available.

Jason Verrett’s workload being limited in camp

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Jason Verrett has made strides during his recovery from an Achilles tear but he isn’t ready to compete for a starting job at cornerback just yet. The 49ers have placed Verrett on what they call a “pitch count,” meaning they’ve limited his workload during the early portions of training camp. On Tuesday, Verrett played right cornerback with the second-string defense. When starter Ahkello Witherspoon tweaked his knee and left practice early, Verrett did not replace him — Greg Mabin did instead.

Roger Diez: Monster Energy drivers enter ‘tricky triangle’ this weekend

Last weekend it was the NTT IndyCar series’ turn for rain delays. The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup series escaped precipitation for once, as New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon remained high and dry all weekend. Yet another new winner took the checkered flag at Loudon, as Kevin Harvick ended his long winless drought with a spirited late-race battle with Denny Hamlin. For the second week in a row, the winning driver came from neither the Gibbs nor the Penske team.

But both hung on for a one-two finish, with big brother Kurt outlasting little brother Kyle to score another win for Chevy.

Cost of Raiders stadium in Las Vegas rises to $1.9 billion

LAS VEGAS — Officials have raised the budget to $1.9 billion for the 65,000-seat Las Vegas Stadium being built for the NFL’s relocated Raiders and UNLV football. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports the stadium authority board on Thursday approved $40 million in construction additions. They include 20 more suites and a field-level club area to be paid for by personal and club seat sales that weren’t part of the original budget.

Both fans and players paid their respects Thursday to former Aces pitcher Tyler Skaggs, who died unexpectedly earlier last week. Prior to the Fourth of July game, players from both Reno and Sacramento lined up for a moment of silence to remember the 27-year-old Skaggs, who pitched for Reno during parts of the 2012 and 2013 seasons. At the time of his death, Skaggs pitched for the Los Angeles Angles, and in his seven-year Major League career, he had a 28-38 record

Last weekend’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup race at Chicagoland was a very good day for Chevrolet. Alex Bowman won the race after finishing second three times earlier in the season.
