As an organization dedicated to supporting families in Douglas County, Family Support Council celebrated 40 years of service with the community Saturday at Heritage Park in Gardnerville.

“We are so excited,” said Family Support Council Executive Director Veronica LaChance. “We have been here for 40 years and we wanted to spend time with the community in a way to thank all of you.”

What started out in 1982 as a group of mental health professionals helping individuals impacted by domestic violence, Family Support Council became a 501 (C) 3 nonprofit organization that serves and promotes thousands of Douglas County families through a variety of services including domestic violence support and healing, therapy, parenting classes and services, resources for individuals with disabilities and more.

“An immense amount of pride goes into what we do here,” said Family Support Council Program Director Jenn Forzani.

The celebration Saturday began with the Douglas County Mounted Posse presenting the colors during the National Anthem and a tribute from North Bay Industries, an organization based in California that handmakes flags and employs individuals with disabilities.

North Bay Industries donated an American flag to the Family Support Council in support of their 40-year anniversary and their dedication and services they provide. The Douglas County Explorers presented the tributed flag to the Family Support Council.

Family Support Council Development Manager Karen Lowry said she met individuals from North Bay Industries during the council’s Autism Faire.

“They wanted to connect with us and show support during our celebration so they donated one of their handmade flags to us,” said Lowry.

Throughout the rest of the celebration, visitors enjoyed shopping the craft venues and tasting the flavors of the food trucks; Wild Horse Pizza, Grandpa Archie’s Ice Cream, Lady Griller catering and the Capital Curbside Cafe.

Raley’s provided a cake for the Family Support Council, made by Raley’s cake maker Alicia Finken.

“With how everything has been the last few years, it’s nice that we were able to get together and do something,” said Raley’s Fresh Service team member Melissa McGuinness.

Some other activities were a corn hole tournament hosted by the Carson Valley 20-30 Club, Tumbleweeds Gymnastics had equipment for little tumblers at the event and a raffle with prizes from the vendors and supporters of the Family Support Council, while False Rhythm Raggae provided entertainment.

“A huge thank you goes out to everyone who helped make this event happen.” Said LaChance. “I want to thank all of you for the love and support for the organization.”
