Dayton baseball, softball split games at regionals

FALLON — Dayton High school’s softball team split its games Thursday in the first day of the 2018 NIAA 3A Northern League Softball Tournament.

Dayton edged Elko, 8-7, in the first round and fell, 12-3, to No. 1 seed Fernley.

Elko took a commanding 6-1 lead over Dayton going into the bottom of the fourth inning. The Dust Devils then scored three runs in the fourth and fifth innings and a lone run in the sixth.

Elko added a run in the top of the seventh inning.

Each team scored a run in the first inning. Tamia Powell’s sacrifice fly accounted for the run after Marissa Hein doubled with one out and then stole third.

Shaye Thompson ripped a three-run double in the fourth, and Caleigh Onstot hit a three-run homer in the fifth.

Hein scored in the sixth inning.

Fernley spotted Dayton a 2-0 first-inning lead on a two-run home run from Julie Rogacs. The Vaqueros responded with seven runs in the second inning. Fernley added three runs in the fourth and two in the sixth.

Hein singled in the fourth, and Powell and Rogacs each singled in the sixth inning.

Dayton plays Friday at 11:30 a.m.


BASEBALL

Dayton wins first, loses second

FALLON — The Dayton baseball team won its first game of the day but dropped the second as Elko rallied in the final inning for a 9-8 win.

A classic game between No. 1 seed Elko and Dayton went back and forth at the NIAA 3A Northern League Baseball Championships.

Going into the seventh inning, Dayton had an 8-7 lead. Elko’s Carter Alvarado opened the bottom of the inning by being hit with a pitch, and one out later, Austyn Marin singled. The Indians loaded the bases after Gavin Byington was hit by a pitch. Kamren Backherms became the hero when he hit a two-run double to give Elko the win.

Dayton scored early when Justin Schmidt singled home a run in the first inning, but Byington tied the score in the bottom of the inning with an RBI. In the see-saw first half of the game, Dayton led 3-1 after scoring two runs in the second on an error and sacrifice from Daniel Hastings. Marin and Byington each had run-producing singles for Elko in the bottom of the inning.

Dayton scored a run in the third and two in the fourth and one each in the fifth and sixth innings.

Dayton put away South Tahoe, 7-3, in a first-round game. Pitcher Trevor Burrows had a strong outing in picking up the win for the Dust Devils and helped his cause with a three-run triple in the second inning. Dayton score a run in the fourth inning on an error and two more in the seventh on RBIs from Schmidt and Zach Woitas.

Dayton banged out 10 hits, while Burrows kept the Vikings to six hits.

Dayton will play against Spring Creek at 11:30 a.m. on Friday.
