Prep Roundup: CHS softball claims 3rd seed with sweep; golfers in line for state

The Carson High softball team’s comeback in the second game of a doubleheader against Douglas just made the playoff picture that more wide open.

Carson finished off the sweep of Douglas on Saturday at CHS, overcoming a 4-1 deficit to beat the Tigers 6-5 in the nightcap. The Senators also edged Douglas 4-3 in the opener.

With the sweep, Carson earned the No. 3 seed in which figures to be a wide open Northern 4A playoffs which will be hosted by the Senators. Carson will open play at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at CHS against No. 6 seed Reed.

Douglas is the No. 5 seed and will open against No. 4 seed McQueen at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at CHS. If Carson and Douglas win their opening playoff games they will advance to a winner’s bracket game at 12:30 p.m. Friday. But a loss would force them to play in an elimination game at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Jailene Salciedo finished off the comeback for Carson with a two-run single in the sixth inning to give the Senators a 6-4 lead. Carson scored three runs in the fifth to tie the score 4-4. Kailee Luschar hit a home run and Kedra Luschar and Salciedo also all drove in runs during the rally.

Douglas took a 1-0 lead in the first on Kettja Bennett’s RBI single.

Salciedo also pitched a complete game for the win, allowing five runs on seven hits over seven innings.

Carson had 11 hits. Amaya Mendeguia, Salciedo, Kailee Luschar, Kedra Luschar and Bella Kordonowy all had two hits for CHS. Douglas had seven hits. Bennett went 3-for-4 and Alyssa Smokey had two hits for the Tigers.

In the opener, Haley Doughty hit a home run to give Douglas a 1-0 lead in the first. But Salciedo hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to give CHS a 2-1 lead.

Salciedo also pitched a complete game in the opener for the win. She allowed three runs on six hits and didn’t walk a batter over seven innings.

Kailee Luschar, Kedre Luschar, Salciedo, Camryn Quilling, and Caydee Farnworth each had one hit for the Senators. Douglas had six hits as Smokey and Doughty each had two hits for the Tigers.

Dayton sweeps

The Dayton High softball team is heading into the playoffs on a high note after sweeping a doubleheader against Sparks. The Dust Devils beat Sparks 11-0 on Friday and 16-0 on Saturday.

Dayton is the No. 5 seed in the Northern 3A playoffs being hosted by Elko. The Dust Devils will open the playoffs against No. 4 seed Elko at 9 a.m. Thursday.

Caleigh Onstott pitched a complete game one-hit shutout for Dayton on Saturday. Tamia Powell went 2-for-3 wiht four RBI to lead the Dust Devils. She had an RBI single in the first, drove in a run in the second and a two-run triple in a six-run fourth as Dayton took a 16-0 lead. Marissa Hein also had a two-run homer and Amanda Woitas had an RBI double during the fourth inning rally.

Onstott also had an RBI single in the first as Dayton took a 5-0 lead.

The Dust Devils had 15 hits. Woitas went 3-for-4 and Ontstott, Pouwell, Hein and Elizabeth Vincent all had two hits for Dayton. Dayton also had six stolen bases and Vincent had two stolen bases.

In the win on Friday, Onstott pitched also pitched a shutout for the win, allowing three hits while striking out six and walking one. Hein went 2-for-4, Powell had a hit and four RBI and Vincent and Julie Rogacs each added a hit for Dayton.

BASEBALL

Manogue 3, CHS 2

Jade Stotts, Bryce Baker and Delsin Roberts all had a hit and Kahle Good doubled for Carson in its loss to Manogue in a nonleague game on Saturday. Carson also didn’t commit an error in the field.

Damian Branco gave Carson an outstanding effort in the relief, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out five and walking one over four innings.

Douglas baseball in playoffs

The Douglas High baseball team will open in the playoffs at Reno High at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday.
