Prep Roundup: Dayton softball sweeps series against Elko


DAYTON — The Dayton Dust Devils remained unbeaten with a 13-5 win over Elko on Tuesday afternoon in a Northern 3A softball game.

The win completed a three-game sweep. Dayton is 10-0-1.

Dayton snapped a 3-all tie with five runs in the bottom of the third. Caleigh Onstott had a run-scoring single and Aleea Howe drove in two. Alaura Greenwalt laid down a sacrifice bunt.

Howe went 4-for-4 with three RBI, Elizabeth Vincent went 3-for-4 with two RBI, Amanda Woitas went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Tamia Powell went 3-for-4 and Marissa Hein went 2-for-5 with an RBI.

On Monday, the Dust Devils pulled off a doubleheader sweep, winning 7-6 and 10-7.

Dayton trailed 6-2 in the fourth, but cut the lead to 6-5 on a double by Howe and run-scoring infield outs by Julie Rogacs and Greenwalt. In the fifth, Dayton went ahead for good when Vincent had a RBI single and Howe had a sacrifice fly.

Amanda Woitas went 2-for-3 with a solo homer. Vincent and Powell both went 2-for-3.

Onstott picked up the win in the circle, allowing seven hits and three runs.

In the second game, Dayton scored five runs to break open a 5-4 game. Woitas, Marissa Hein, Onstott and Vincent each had RBIs in the fifth.

Hein went 3-for-3, while Woitas and Rogacs added two hits.


Reed rally tops CHS

The perennial powerhouse Raiders scored all three of their runs in one inning en route to a 3-1 win over Carson on Tuesday afternoon.

Aliya Lange fanned 11 and allowed just four hits in getting the win over Jailene Salciedo, who pitched a solid game, allowing seven hits and two earned runs.

Kedre Luschar singled home Carson’s only run in the first. Kailee Luschar led Carson with two hits and Cam Quilling also had a hit.


BASEBALL

Senators pound Swett

CROCKETT — Carson opened its Bay Area trip with a 14-1 win over John Swett in a game called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Vernon Painter worked the first four innings, allowing a run on four hits. He fanned three batters. Avery Powell pitched the final inning for Carson.

Jared Barnard drove in two runs in the first with a single. Carson scored three in the first, four in the third, one in the fourth and six in the fifth. Josh Buchan, Kobe Morgan, Abel Carter, Joe Tonino and Josh Ingram drove in runs in the fifth.

Barnard went 2 for 3, Landon Truesdale went 1 for 2 with an RBI, Colby Zemp went 1 for 3 with an RBI, Tonino went 1 for 3 with two RBI and Carter went 1 for 3.

Elko sweeps Dayton

DAYTON — The Elko Indians swept Dayton to open its league season, beating the Dust Devils 5-2 and 8-4 on Monday and completing the sweep with a 4-1 win on Tuesday.

Trevor Burrows hit a solo homer and Jake Madson had a double in the opener. Madson scored Dayton’s second run on an error.

In the second game, doubles by Burrows and Justin Schmidt plus a homer by Zach Woitas gave Dayton a 3-2 lead. Dayton took a 4-2 lead, but Elko stormed back and put the game on ice with five runs in the sixth.

On Tuesday, Madson led Dayton with a 2-for-3 day at the plate, and Woitas hit a double and scored the Dust Devils’ only run.
