This May, families and young aviation enthusiasts alike are invited to soar into adventure at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park for the Model Airplane Program. Organized by the non-profit Friends of Dangberg Home Ranch, this event pays homage to the passion for aviation held by Steve “Dink” Achard, the last member of the Dangberg family to grow up at the Home Ranch.

Scheduled for 10-11:30 a.m. May 18 the Model Airplane Program promises an enriching experience for children ages 5-10, although youth of all ages are welcome. Admission is free of charge with a recommended donation of $5 per child. Space is limited, and advance registration at Dangberg.org is recommended. For more information or for alternate event registration, contact Sierra Meszaros at education@dangberg.org.

All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the entire event.

Inspired by Dink Achard’s adoration for planes and flying, participants will have the chance to construct and decorate small, easy-to-build, model airplanes. Attendees will learn some of the history of local aviation, including Achard’s love for planes developed as a young pilot in the 1940s, from artifacts, documents, and photographs on display in a special exhibit inside the historic Dangberg ranch house.

Sierra Sagebrush Flyers, a local model airplane club, will also be at the park that morning, demonstrating more advanced, motorized model planes.

“We’re excited to provide this opportunity for the young members of our community to learn more about planes and the history of the Home Ranch, enjoy the park, and express their creativity,” said Dangberg Home Ranch Education Specialist Sierra Meszaros.

Education programs at Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park receive generous support from Douglas County, Frances C. and William P. Smallwood Foundation, Minden Fortnightly Club, and Carson Valley Lions Club.
