Prep Roundup: Carson High softball tops Reed in playoff opener

RENO — Carson High’s softball team opened the 4A regional playoffs with an impressive 8-0 win over Reed on Thursday afternoon at Bishop Manogue High School.

Carson advances to play Spanish Springs today at 12:30 with the winner advancing to the semifinals.

Jailene Salciedo threw a four-hitter, striking out three and walking two. She threw 90 pitches, 60 for strikes. Salciedo did a good job of staying ahead, throwing 20 first-pitch strikes against 27 hitters.

“We gave her some rest this week,” Carson coach Carlos Mendeguia said. “She had good velocity and she changed speeds well.

“(Aliya) Lange is a good pitcher. She kept us off balance. I thought it was going to be a grind-it-out, 2-1 type of game.”

It was a 2-0 game until the sixth when the Senators put it out of reach with six runs. Lange threw 5 1/3 innings, allowing eight runs and nine hits. Only two of Carson’s runs were earned, as Reed made four errors, three by Shelby Marquardt, all in the same inning.

Lauren Lemburg singled, moved to second on a single by Kailee Luschar and scored on a single by Kedre Luschar. Salciedo lined into a double play to end the inning.

Cam Quilling homered to center to lead off the fifth. With one out, Lemburg singled to center, but Lange retired the next three hitters.

The Senators scored six in the sixth, three coming on a homer by Kailee Luschar. Reed made three errors in the inning, and Carson made the Raiders pay in a big way.

Lemburg, Kailee Luschar and Kedre Luschar all had two hits. Quilling, Amaya Mendeguia, Kassidy Cooley and Salciedo all added a hit apiece.

Alycia Coats had two of Reed’s four hits.

DOUGLAS 16, DAMONTE 5

RENO — Haley Doughty’s second homer of the game, a three-run shot in the sixth inning, enabled the Douglas Tigers to close out a 16-5 opening round win against Damonte Ranch at the Northern 4A Region Tournament Thursday.

Douglas (22-9-1 overall) advanced to face tournament host Bishop Manogue in the winner’s bracket semifinals Friday at 12:30 p.m.

Doughty hit 3-for-5 with two homers, five RBI and three runs scored for the third seeded Tigers against No. 6 seed Damonte Ranch. Amanda Hoffman hit 3-for-4 with two RBI, Casey Peck 2-for-3 and Alyssa Smokey 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Tigers’ 14-hit attack.

In each of the last two years, the region softball tournament’s No. 6 seed had opened with a win over No. 3. The Tigers came out and took control from the start, however, as they took a 6-0 lead in the first inning. Chloie Pratt delivered an RBI single and Smokey followed with a two-run double to spark the rally.

The Tigers extended their lead to 10-0 in the third inning, highlighted by Doughty’s two-run homer to center field and a two-run single by Jasmine McNinch.

Damonte Ranch answered with three runs in the fourth inning and two more runs in the fifth, only to see the Tigers score six times in the sixth to force a mercy rule finish.

Deztiny Vaughan pitched the six-inning distance for Douglas. Vaughan allowed seven hits to go with nine strikeouts and one walk.
