Prep Roundup: Carson High softball wins 2

SPARKS — Carson High’s softball team closed out the Reed Easter Tournament with wins over Newark-Memorial and Lassen on Saturday at Shadow Mountain Park.

The Senators, who went 3-2 in the event, opened play on Saturday with a 10-6, 5-inning win over Newark, and then followed that with a 9-4 win over Lassen.

Against Newark, Carson trailed 6-5 entering the fifth and exploded for five runs. The key hit was a two-run single by Alex Salciedo.

Jailene Salciedo and Alex Salciedo both went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Kedre and Kailee Luschar each had a run and RBI. Lauren Lemburg went 1-for-3.

Jailene Salciedo, after giving up four runs in the first, settled down in the circle.

In the win over Lassen, a six-run second inning was the difference. Camryn Quilling’s three-run homer was the key blow. Jailene Salciedo had a two-run single and Alex Salciedo drove in a run in the inning.

Alex Salciedo and Lauren Lemburg led the offense with two hits apiece.

Freshman Taylor Murphy allowed two runs and five hits over the final four innings to pick up the win.

Dayton sweeps Spring Creek

ELKO — The Dust Devils completed a three-game sweep of Spring Creek with 13-3 and 19-12 wins on Saturday.

Dayton hosts South Tahoe on Tuesday.

In the opener, Dayton broke open a 5-3 game with five runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to win via the mercy rule.

Shay Thompson, Alaura Greenwalt, Amanda Woitas and Tamia Powell all drove in runs in the fifth.

Julie Rogacs went 3-for-3 and Elizabeth Vincent went 3-for-4. Woitas went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs and Marissa Hein went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Powell, Caleigh Onstott and Aleea Howe all drove in two runs.

Woitas threw all six innings, allowing six hits and striking out eight.

In the second game, Dayton scored 18 of its runs in the final three innings to earn the win. The Dust Devils took advantage of 13 walks and eight stolen bases.

In the eight-run sixth, Powell, Onstott, Vincent, Rogacs, Cassie Dickenson and Hein all drove in runs.

Rogacs went 4-for-5 and drove in four runs, Vincent went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs and Hein went 3-for-5 with two RBI.

BASEBALL

Carson splits doubleheader

BERKELEY, Calif. — Carson High’s baseball team ended its Bay Area road trip with a split against St. Mary’s-Berkeley on Saturday.

In the opener, the Senators snapped a 6-all tie in the top of the seventh with four runs for a 10-6 win. In the nightcap, the Senators scored four in the top of the seventh only to give up two in the bottom of the inning, leading to a 7-6 loss.

Carson returns to action Monday at 6 p.m. against Spanish Springs at Ron McNutt Field.

Delsin Roberts had a key seventh-inning double for the Senators, who got a 3-for-5 and three RBI effort from Kahle Good and a 3-for-5 effort from Abel Carter. Jared Barnard had two hits for CHS.

Carson led 6-2 through five thanks to a nice job on the mound from Ben Nelson, who allowed one earned run and three hits. The Panthers came back against Quinn Overland, who gave up four runs and two hits in one-third of an inning. Avery Powell picked up the win with 1.2 innings of one-hit relief.

Carson out-hit St. Mary’s, 8-6, but was unable to hold a 6-5 lead in the seventh. Powell took the loss, giving up two runs and two hits in the bottom of the seventh. Barnard started and walked five in 3.1 innings, and Powell walked three.

Carter went 2-for-3 to lead Carson. Good, Landon Truesdale, Roberts, Teigen Key, Joe Tonino and Josh Buchan all had a hit each.

Dayton takes series

ELKO — Dayton split Saturday’s doubleheader to win the series against Spring Creek.

Dayton took Friday’s opener, 6-1, behind Trevor Burrows’ sterling 3-hit effort on the mound. Spring Creek won Saturday’s opener, 17-16, and Dayton rolled to a 14-4 win in the second game.

On Friday, Burrows fanned eight and also helped himself at the plate, going 2-for-3, including a homer.

Isaac Von Schoff went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Zach Woitas went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

In the Saturday opener, Dayton scored six in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 16. Spring Creek won in the seventh on a walk-off homer.

Woitas led Dayton, going 4-for-5 with five RBI. Cole Purdy went 3-for-5 with three RBI and Burrows went 3-for-5 with an RBI.

In the series decider, the Dust Devils got a 3-for-4 effort from Carlos Hernandez, and two hits and two RBI from Justin Schmidt. Burrows and Jake Madson drove in two runs each.

Carson boys 8th at Reed

SPARKS — Carson High’s boys track team finished eighth at the annual Reed Sparks Rotary Invitational on Saturday at Reed High School.

Carson finished with 35 points, Sierra Lutheran was 15th with 13 points and Dayton was 23rd with 3 points. On the girls side, Carson was ninth with 35 and Dayton was 10th with 34.

Carson’s Abigail Pradere doubled up, winning the 800 (2:23.2) and the 1600 (5:19.70). Rheanna Jackson was second in the 3200 (12:03.02) and was eighth in the 1600 (2:31.12). The 1600 and 3200 relay squads finished sixth and eighth, respectively, clocking 4:24.10 and 10:58.20. Annika Wick, Pradere, Jackson and Gabriela Fernandez ran the 1600, while Blanca Sosa, Chloe Hataway, Erin Cartier and Hannah Kaiser ran the 3200. Amanda Schulz was eighth in the discus (97-6), Abbey Paulson was eighth in the triple jump (32-4) and ninth in the long jump (14-10).

Ashley Mason won the triple jump with a 34-10 effort and was third in the long jump at 16-feet. Rebecca Mason was second in the high jump at 5-feet. Dayton’s relay teams (800 in 1:49.80 and 1600 4:19.64) both finished fourth. Macie Callan, Sydney Strickler, and Ashley and Rebecca Mason ran the 800, and the Masons, Strickler and Grace Wells ran the longer event.

Hunter Rauh led the Carson boys contingent, finishing second in the 800 (2:03.01) and taking eighth in the 1600 (4:45.28). He also ran a leg on the third place 1600 relay (3:40.60). Darryll Heyward, Gryphon Matthies and Chance Smith were also on the team. Heyward, Tucker Nichols, Smith and Ben Granados were second in the 800 relay (1:38.4). Matthies, Jayson Legott, Ethan Byasse and Trinity Medina were third in the 3200 relay. Granados was third in the 100 at 11.42. Dominic Martinez was seventh in the 400 (56.34).

Jared Marchegger led Sierra Lutheran with a second in the 3200 (9:53.7) and a 10th in the 1600 (4:48.24). Peyton Hedwall was fourth in the shotput (48-7). The quartet of Caleb Contreras, Shawn Emm, Johannes Lamprecht and John Miles were third in the 1600 relay (3:49.9). Bret Walker was ninth in the discus (127-7) and 10th in the shot (42-11 1/4).

Jeff Walker led Dayton with a 12-foot vault for sixth, and he was 11th in the 300 hurdles (44.55). David Delfin was 10th in the discus (126-3). The 1600 relay team of Peter Micklich, Zane Weston, Sunny Rojas and Michael Rhoades was fifth in 3:52.9.
