Prep roundup: Dayton baseball rolls to sweep

DAYTON — Dayton High got outstanding pitching from Isaac Von Schoff and Dylan Baker en route to sweeping Truckee, 11-2 and 9-3, in a Northern 3A doubleheader Friday afternoon.

The teams conclude the three-game series and the regular season today at 9 a.m.

Baker worked the opener, going 6.2 innings and allowed just five hits and one earned run. He fanned five and walked two.

Dayton bolted to an 8-0 lead after three, scoring three each in the first and second innings, and added two in the third.

In the three-run first, Trevor Burrows homered, Nick Hein doubled in a run and Zach Woitas had an RBI single. Jesse Schmidt made it 4-0 with a run-scoring double and Baker helped his own cause with a two-run homer. In the third, Burrows stroked a two-run double.

Burrows went 3-for-5 and drove in 4 runs, Jesse Schmidt went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Baker went 2-for-4 with two RBI, Justin Schmidt went 2-for-4, Hein went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Woitas went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

In the second game, Truckee led 3-2 entering the bottom of the fifth, but Dayton scored three in the fifth and four in the sixth to regain control.

Singles by Jesse Schmidt, Baker, Jake Madson and Justin Schmidt plus a walk were the keys in the fifth, and C.J. Wilhite’s double an singles by Justin and Jesse Schmidt and Aiden Howe led the sixth-inning uprising.

Justin and Jesse Schmidt had three hits apiece, and Howe added two.

MINDEN — The season-ending doubleheader between Carson and Douglas has been moved to 9 a.m. today in an attempt to get both games in before a weather front moves in.

Carson is 8-10 entering the day and Douglas is 6-12. The Tigers are currently tied with Galena for the last playoff spot.

Dayton pulls off

DAYTON — The Dust Devils gained the early advantage in both games of Friday’s 3A doubleheader, and the early outbursts led to 6-0 and 9-3 victories.

In the 6-0 win, Caleigh Onstott blanked Truckee on four hits and she fanned four batters.

Aleea Howe, Elizabeth Vincent, Tamia Powell, Julie Rogacs and Amanda Woitas all had two hits. Woitas had a run-scoring hit in the first, jump-starting the Dayton offense. Hits by Howe, Vincent and Powell keyed the three-run sixth inning.

In the nightcap, Dayton broke open a tight game with five runs in the sixth inning to win handily.

Woitas gave up just one earned run and struck out five.

Powell led the offense with three hits and four runs scored. Nobody else had more than one hit.

“The girls played very well defensively today making only one error,” Dayton coach Dusti Houk said. “Both pitchers pitched well and were in control all the way.”
