Nearly a third of the total $697 was raised in less than an hour at Minden’s 2nd National Night Out event at the Ironwood Shopping Center on Tuesday.

Two Stone Slab & Tile Manager Jonelle Spafford who coordinated the event said the proceeds were donated to Douglas County Sheriff’s Advisory Council.

“It’s just a real positive local event to get the community together,” said Spafford.

Always on the first Tuesday of August, National Night Out has been a countrywide event for 40 years that brings neighbors, businesses and law enforcement together in a positive setting to build relationships in the community.

Tuesday’s event was the second year Minden has participated.

“We got tons of positive feedback from everyone who attended and from the vendors last year who wanted to come back and do it again,” said Spafford. “I think it’s something that can be enjoyed by all and it’s great for the local businesses, nonprofits and services.”

Spafford said Minden’s event highlights and benefits local nonprofits or services. Last year at least $630 was raised for the Douglas County Animal Services.

“We like to help out whoever is in need at that time,” said Spafford.

This year’s beneficiary, the DCSO Advisory Council is nonprofit that raises funds for the Douglas County Sherriff’s Office’s education, training, resources, equipment and more. Visit www.sheriffscouncil.org for more information.

During the event, Reno western musician “Mr. Johnson” entertained while Out West Catering, CV Flyte, Gonuts4Donuts, and more provided food and drinks and other vendors such as Carson Valley Health, DCSO SWAT and K-9 units provided information about the organizations.

Businesses in the Ironwood Center also opened their doors to attendees, including Carson Valley Cinema, Shoe Tree Brewing Company, All About Dance and Carson Valley Kids.

“I think people really enjoy coming out to this,” said Spafford. “Kids are still out of school and families are looking for something to do, it’s an all-around great event.”

The Douglas County Sheriff’s office will have another fundraising opportunity Saturday at Millennium Medical Spa during the 4th annual Pizza Pistols & Pooches event.

Millennium hosts the Law Enforcement Appreciation event while raising funds and awareness for the DCSO Sheriff’s K-9 unit.

Last year the event raised over $6,000 which went towards upkeep, training and special equipment for the K-9s units.

“They do a lot for the community and should have the support and help,” said Millennium Cosmetic Professional Pam Horton during last year’s event.
