Special Olympians and Douglas County Sheriff's Office personnel conduct a torch run on Friday morning in Gardnerville.

Around 40 Special Olympians and supporters from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office ran from Heritage Park to the Judicial & Law Enforcement Center on Friday morning.

Accompanied by an escort consisting of the Sheriff’s Office’s MRAP, the event saw a return of an annual event.

Last year’s run was replaced by an online fitness challenge that culminated in a group workout at Lampe Park.

The run is designed to raise awareness of Special Olympics.

Residents were out with signs in support of the runners on Friday.

There were a few delays, but motorists on Main Street did a good job of spotting the runners and moving into the No. 1 travel lane.
