Weather Service issues fire weather watch for today

A fire weather watch takes effect this afternoon as thunderstorms couple with tinder dry vegetation to make for dangerous fire conditions.

So far Western Nevada has been wildfire-free, with only a few home fires.

But with little or no precipitation in Carson Valley during June, and an increasing chance of thunderstorms, brush has turned tinder dry.

"In the watch area, fuels have been deemed to be critically dry," according to the National Weather Service.

Most of the thunderstorms will be north of Highway 50, but there will be a chance of thunderstorms in the south as well.

Residents should expect strong erratic winds of up to 50 mph near storms.
