Submit photos for next year's DCHS calendar

Congratulations to Dean Ward, the winner Douglas County Historical Society's August photo contest. Dean's photo, "Car Show Colors," certainly says August in Douglas County. That completes the calendar for the year 2010. Congratulations to all our winners and runners-up. Look for your copy of the DCHS 2010 calendar soon. And thank you for all your photos; they were great.

It's up to you to determine whether we will continue to have monthly photo contests. If you submit your photos for the September photo contest, we'll continue on and plan for a DCHS 2011 calendar. The September contest is now open and your photos are welcome until the end of the month.

Labor Day weekend is upon us. Since the Gardnerville museum is closed for the holiday, plan on visiting the Genoa Courthouse Museum for this month's Student-Senior Day. Genoa will be open to all seniors and students accompanied by an adult tomorrow for no admission charge.

Also coming up is the next lecture series featuring Darin Talbot who speak about his CDs which give the history of the locations around Lake Tahoe. His "Around Tahoe" lecture will start 7 p.m. Thursday at the Gardnerville museum. Admission is free for DCHS members and $3 for non-members.

Saturday, Sept. 12, is the last of this summer's swap meets. This is your last chance to unload all that stuff you've been saving. Bring it down to the Gardnerville museum parking lot and set up a booth. Booth space is only $10 and you can display your treasures while chatting with your neighbors as they shop. Don't miss this swap meet; there won't be another one until next year.

Thursday, Sept. 17, is the last of the Thirsty Third Thursday Wine Walks. This month's theme is Hawaiian, so pull out that hula skirt and Hawaiian shirt and join in the fun. As usual, the Gardnerville museum will be open as a stop on your walk. Come on in and check us out.

Don't forget Haunted Weekend coming up in October. You will have four chances to walk about the area and learn the history of our valley. You can take your pick of venue or you can visit all four. Tickets will be on sale soon.

For any questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
