Haunted ghost walks and cemetery tours this month

We have a wonderful winner for the September Photo Contest. Merry Muller has truly captured September in our valley with "Valley Sage." This truly says "September" in Douglas County. Congratulations and thanks to Merry.

This means that the October contest is now open. Photos of whatever you think of when you think of October in Douglas County are due by 4 p.m. Oct. 31. You can deliver them directly to the Gardnerville museum or e-mail them to the address below. You can't win if you don't enter. Everyone who lives in Douglas County is eligible to enter and win.

The 2010 calendar is currently at the printers but should be ready for sale toward the end of the month. We'll let you know as soon as it becomes available. Those who have pre-ordered are guaranteed delivery of the number of calendars they ordered. The rest of the calendars will be on sale in the Main Street Bookstore.

The ladies who manage the Main Street Bookstore have been busy upgrading and reorganizing. They have brought in a limited edition Christmas ornament which will be the first of a series of historic sites in Nevada. This first ornament is a replica of Mormon Station in Genoa with a brief history on the back. What a great idea to start someone on a collection of these ornaments.

This year we will also be issuing a Douglas County Historical Society Christmas card using the winning December photo from our 2010 calendar. This photo of the Genoa Bar during our Christmas Day snow storm is a great way to let friends know how beautiful northern Nevada is, especially in the winter. Another new item is hand-stamped, DCHS logo coasters. These will be another collectors' item. Stop by and see all we have to offer next time you're in the Gardnerville museum.

Upcoming in just a couple of weeks will be the four-day Haunted Weekend, starting with Haunted Minden on Thursday, Oct. 22. The Haunted Gardnerville Ghost Walk on Oct. 23 departs from the Gardnerville museum. The Haunted Genoa Cemetery Tour on Oct. 24 departs every 15 minutes at the Genoa Cemetery and the Haunted Genoa Ghost Walk departs from the Genoa Courthouse Museum on Oct. 25. Tickets are on sale now and will sell out fast. Call DCHS at 782-2555 for more information or to purchase by credit card.

For any questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
