The August photo contest is the last one to fill out the Douglas County Historical Society's 2011 calendar. We need your entry of what you think of when you think of August in our county. Take a picture of what seems most like August to you and bring it to the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville or e-mail it to the address below by Aug. 31. The winner will be announced Sept. 3.
Once we have all our winners, we will take our 2011 calendar to the printer. This year we are only going to print a limited edition of the calendar, so either get your requests into the museum at 782-2555 or be ready to get to the museum gift shop to get your copies when they are ready. As soon as we meet with the printer, we'll let you know what the calendar will cost this year and when it will be available for purchase.
The Douglas County Historical Society has become a participant in the Blue Star Museums program, that offers free admission to museums for all active duty military personnel and their families through Labor Day, Sept. 6. This program offers these families a chance to visit museums this summer when many will have limited resources and limited time to be together. Though the time left is short, all military personnel and their families are welcome at our two museums.
The next in the lecture series on Sept. 9 is Dennis Cassinelli speaking on how some of the characters from Douglas County participated in the Comstock boom. Tickets are free for Douglas County Historical Society members and only $3 for non-members. The lecture starts at 7 p.m.
The Sept. 11 flea market will be here before you know it. You can reserve your 10-by-10 foot space in advance for only $10. Applications are available at the Gardnerville museum or www.historicnevada.org. The flea market is 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. Everyone is welcome to set up a booth to sell or come on out to shop.
The final Thirsty Third Thursday of the year is 4:30-8 p.m. Sept. 16 with a Hawaiian theme. The registration booth will be at the Gardnerville museum. Come celebrate downtown in Hawaiian-style.
