Gingerbread on display

The All Things Gingerbread display of handcrafted ginger houses, gingerbread cookies, decorations and instructional material on the making of the houses is featured at the Douglas County Public Library in Minden during November.  

How to make a gingerbread house

Turia Todd of Grace and Ida's Cookies offers a class on building gingerbread houses, 10 a.m. Nov. 21, at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center.

The class is offered to adults and children with adult supervision to encourage participation in the gingerbread contest.

There is no entry fee for the class, but each participant must bring their own store-bought gingerbread kit; average cost per kit is $10.

Deadline for gingerbread contest Dec. 4

Applications for the Carson Valley Arts Council's fifth annual gingerbread house decorating contest are available at the CVAC office in the Copeland Cultural Arts Center, the Douglas County Public Library in Minden, the Douglas County Parks & Recreation office and the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville.

Completed gingerbread houses are due by 3:30 p.m. Dec. 4 at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center. The exhibit opens Dec. 5.

Contest categories include Best Family Project, Best Children's Entry, Best Individual, and Best Community Group. The People's Choice Award is determined by votes received from visitors viewing the exhibit.

Contest winners will be announced at a reception, 1 p.m. Dec. 19.

Store-bought gingerbread craft kits may be used provided additional decorative candies are used to customize the kit.

The contest is hosted by the CVAC and is sponsored in part by Walmart Supercenter Store No. 1648, Douglas County Parks & Recreation and Grace & Ida's Cookies.
