December photo contest winner announced

We have a winner for the December photo contest. Dave Stewart captured several shots of our gorgeous white Christmas and submitted the winning photo of Christmas in Genoa. Our runners-up are Anne Bothwell and Kathy Port. Thank you to everyone who submitted a photo.

We had a lot of photos submitted for December. Thanks to all of you who entered.  Please keep submitting those photos as the January photo contest is open. We're looking for something that says January in Douglas County. You are the judge of what that may be.

When you do submit your January photo, be sure to submit it in high resolution, particularly if you e-mail photos into the contest. The winning photo will need to be enlarged to 8 by 10 inches and will look grainy if the resolution isn't high enough.

Jan. 16 is the start of Ralph Chizek's watercolor painting class that will meet weekly until May 15. The class is open to the public and admission is free. The first class will discuss the requirements for paints, brushes, etc., that will be needed. Call 782-2555 to reserve your space. You could be an artist and just not know it.

The melodrama is coming soon. We are well into our rehearsal schedule and the play is really coming together. Tickets are on sale now at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center. Get them early as we always sell out and you won't want to miss this wonderful spoof on our valley. Tickets are $20 for the dinner shows on Feb. 6 and 7 and $15 for the Feb. 8 luncheon matinee. Call 782-2555; we accept credit cards and will hold tickets for you.

The Douglas County Historical Society will be celebrating National Women in History Month by honoring Douglas County women at a reception March 28. The public is invited to nominate women for this honor as well as to attend the reception.

Nominated women will have made a significant historical contribution to the quality of life in Douglas County and must have lived here during some portion of their life. The women may be alive or deceased. Nominating packets are available at the Gardnerville museum or by calling 782-2555 or Helen Chappell at 782-2643. The deadline for nominations is 4 p.m., March 6.

If you have any questions about anything mentioned here, please call the Douglas County Historical Society at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Visit our Web site at www.historicnevada.org. Remember, DCHS and its two museums, the museum in Gardnerville and the Genoa Court House Museum, do not receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
