Photo winner captures March in Carson Valley

The winner of the Douglas County Historical Society's March photo contest is Darleen Dils' "Spring in Carson Valley." Darleen has captured March perfectly with beautiful spring blooms topped with an icing of snow. Our runner-up is Anne Bothwell. Thanks to both ladies for their excellent photography.

Every month the winning and runner-up photos are posted at the front desk at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville. Come in and see the March 2010 calendar pages for a sneak peek into next year's calendar.

Thanks to all who submitted photos for March. We had so many to choose from that it seemed a shame to only chose one or two, so museum curator Ellen Martin came up with an idea to use more photographs.

Shoppers in our Main Street Bookstore always want post cards or note cards showing our beautiful valley and are particularly interested in Christmas cards. We thought we'd check into making collections of your photos into cards. Your photography would be on display and our museums would benefit from your talents.

We need to find a printer who is willing to help us with some printing chores. If you know a printer who would be interested, contact the Gardnerville museum at 782-2555 or me directly at 790-1565.

Congratulations to the seven ladies who were honored at the Women in History on Saturday and thanks to everyone who came to help celebrate. There were close to 100 in attendance and everyone enjoyed the presentations and the refreshments.

The Gardnerville museum opens 10 a.m. Saturday for Student/Senior Day. Tours and the programs include explanations of the exhibits in the Washoe Room and stories by Lynda Shoshone, program coordinator for the Washoe Language Program, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Admission is free for all seniors and students accompanied by an adult.

The barns included on this year's barn tour on May 23 are those the central Valley with the Dangberg Home Ranch tour available for an additional fee. The barn book, which will be your ticket, features a new barn poem written by cowboy poet Ken Gardner.

For any questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
