Photo of 'Cottonwood Lace' takes first in museum contest

GARDNERVILLE, Nev.

We have a January winner in our photo contest. The winner is Lou Ann Yang's beautiful entry entitled "Cottonwood Lace." Congratulations. Our runner-up is Anne Bothwell. Thanks to our winners and thanks to all of you who entered. Please keep entering. Your photos are beautiful and we love seeing what you think each month in Douglas County looks like.

If you have tickets for the "Hotel Minden" melodrama, we're ready and waiting for you. This is the hottest show in town. I think you will agree once you have seen it. We'll be looking for you tonight, Saturday and Sunday. We can't wait to thank you in person for making this the most successful melodrama ever.

There are other things going on. Saturday is Student-Senior Day and we are showing that old favorite "Chicken Every Sunday." The movie was partly filmed here in Carson Valley. Showings will be at 11 a.m.. and 1 p.m. Each showing takes approximately an hour and 45 minutes. Make sure to be here for this movie because we won't show it again for a while.

Thursday, Feb. 12, is our monthly lecture series. Joe Curtis, retired assistant sheriff from Carson City, Virginia City fire chief and owner of the Mark Twain Bookstore and Museum in Virginia City will give us a pictorial look at Virginia City 's past. The lecture is free to the public and starts at 7 p.m. The museum and the Main Street Bookstore open at 6:30 p.m. and remain open after the lecture.

We will be celebrating National Women in History Month by honoring Douglas County women at a reception on Saturday, March 28. The public is invited to nominate women for this honor as well as to attend the reception. Nominating packets are available at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center or by calling 782-2555 or Helen Chappell at 782-2643. The deadline for nominations is 4 p.m., March 6.

And, of course, it's now February and that means that the February photo contest is open. So far, we have photo pages for September, October, November, December and January for our 2010 calendar. February will put us halfway through. We really need your photo showing us what you thing of when you think of February in Douglas County. Entries accepted until 4 p.m. Feb. 28.

If you have any questions about anything mentioned here, please call the Douglas County Historical Society at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Visit our Web site at www.historicnevada.org. Remember, DCHS and its two museums, the Gardnerville museum and the Genoa Court House Museum, do not receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
