Genoa, Nev. — Nevada Department of Agriculture Entomologist Jeff Knight identified the mystery bug that swarmed the Martin Slough Trail as clearwinged grasshoppers, according to Gardnerville Town Manager Erik Nilssen. I don’t know who had them in the betting pool, but it wasn’t me.

Mottsville Lane will be closed from approximately 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. today to clean and repair damage from recent flooding.

The Carson Water Subconservancy District announced the winners of its Peak Flow contest. Shane Fryer was correct that the Carson River would crest on May 26 where it flows south of Prison Hill. Debbie Neddenriep guessed the correct peak average runoff at 5,900 cubic feet per second.

The peak flow for the East Fork at Horseshoe Bend south of Gardnerville was 14.06 feet on May 23, which is a few days before that bulge made it down to Carson City.

The East Fork is anticipated to rise back up to the action stage of 13 feet at Horseshoe Bend on Monday morning. The West Fork will also be running high with a forecast 13.9-foot crest on Sunday morning.

I’m not entirely sure how busy things will be on the Third of July, but we’re putting the paper to bed that morning to accommodate the press schedule. The R-C crew will be out and about on the Fourth hitting the highlights. That coverage will be online as it rolls in and in the July 8 print edition.

We’re looking at the warmest temperatures so far in 2023, though far from the warmest first days of July on record in Minden. Saturday and Sunday are forecast to hit highs of 96 degrees, well below the 102-degree records for the dates. Things are expected to cool off to the low 90s by the Fourth.

The forecast calls for sunny skies today with a high temperature of 85 degrees with the wind out of the northwest at 5-10 mph this afternoon.
