Summer reading program starts at library

The Douglas County Public Library invites everyone to participate in the 2023 Summer Reading Program.

“All Together Now” is this year’s theme with reading and activity challenges for babies, toddlers, children, teens, and adults. The program runs from June 20 through Aug. 3 at the Minden and Zephyr Cove branches.

Children and teens who participate will earn prizes while they maintain and build their reading skills during summer break. Set up an account on the library’s Beanstack webpage at douglascountynv.beanstack.org to register online starting May 30. Log reading, earn prizes, and enter drawings on Beanstack.

The Library’s Summer Reading Kick-off event will feature a performance by the Japanese drum group, Taiko Tsurunokai, on June 20. There will be a performance at the Zephyr Cove Library at 2 p.m. outside, weather permitting, and at the CVIC Hall in Minden at 4:45 p.m. Members from the Reno Taiko Tsurunokai drum group perform traditional Japanese folk music as well as origi-nal songs.

Frozen treats will be provided as well. The Douglas County Sheriffs Mounted Posse will also be stopping by the Minden Library to help us welcome the Summer Reading Program.

On July 18 Spellbinders! will perform at the Zephyr Cove Branch’s magic show at 11 a.m. and the Minden Library’s show will be 3 p.m. Spellbinders is provided by Education Renaissance of Nevada Initiative.

Gabe Kerschner will talk about a variety of wild and exotic animals from the Conservation Ambassadors on Aug. 1. The Zephyr Cove Branch’s Finale Wildlife show will be held in the Zephyr Cove Library Meeting Room at 2 p.m. The Minden Library’s Finale show will be held at the CVIC Hall in Minden at 4 p.m.

All of these events are free. The Summer Reading Program events are sponsored in part by the Friends of the Douglas County Public Library and the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts. The Summer Reading Program was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Nevada State Library, Archives and Public Records.

• Saturday movies at the Minden branch of the Douglas County Public Library will focus on Father’s Day this month.

Father’s Day is June 18 this year and the following week, “Beast” (R), starring Idris Elba, Sharlto Copley, Leah Jeffries, and Iyana Halley will be shown on June 24.

Movie showings are sponsored by the Friends of the Douglas County Public Library, who provide the popcorn.

• This summer, the Douglas County Public Library in Minden will be offering Storytime at Heritage Park on Wednesdays for the following dates: June 21, 28; July 12, 19, 26; and Aug. 2. Storytime and craft kits are for children of all ages. Storytime will start at 9 a.m. at Heritage Park, located at 1447 Courthouse Alley in Gardnerville.

Effective June 20 through Aug. 3, regular storytime at the Minden Library will occur on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. only. Baby Lap-Sit Storytime will continue on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. Storytime at the Zephyr Cove Library will continue on Wednesdays at 11 a.m.

• The Douglas County Public Library in Minden will be closed on June 19 for Juneteenth. The library will resume its regular schedule on June 20 at 10 a.m.
