A ribbon cutting at the Family Support Council Thursday marked their 40-year anniversary of promoting, educating and serving healthy families in Douglas County.

“We’re beaming with pride and are so proud to be a part of the community,” said Family Support Council Program Director Jenn Forzani.

In 1982 mental health professionals advocated for individuals involved in family violence. 40 years later that effort has grown into a 501(c) 3 non-profit that has served thousands of residents through a variety of services that support healthy families.

Family Support Council Board President Tara Addeo has been serving on the board for seven years and is proud of the services they provide.

“I am very passionate about the Family Support Council and what they do for the community, it’s really about giving back,” said Addeo. “ We are really grateful for the support we receive and being able to continue to promote healthy families.”

The Family Support Council serves Douglas County, Topaz, Wellington, South Carson City and Stateline with services, resources, referral and educational services for victims of violence and provide shelter for adults and child victims along with services for individuals with developmental disabilities, metal illnesses and traumatic brain injuries.

The 40-year celebration continues today during the Family Support Council’s “Let’s Get Support-y for 40” event at Heritage Park.

“We just want people to come out and talk with us, get to know us and the services we provide while taking advantage of the other venues and support them too,” said Family Support Council Development Manager Karen Lowry.

False Rhythm Raggae will provide entertainment and 21 craft vendors are expected to display jewelry and art, including photographers Vivian Powers and Kim Hunter. Food will be provided by Sierra Chef serving sausage and pepper sandwiches and Lady Grill’s mounted Nacho fries. The Carson Valley 20-30 club will provide beer and wine and host a Cornhole tournament.

Lowry said Raley’s is providing a “Happy Birthday” cake special for the event and Grocery Outlet will have samples and raffle prizes.

“We hope everyone can get out and support the event,” said Forzani. “An immense amount of pride goes into everything we do here.”
