Volunteers will be placing flags on the 350 graves of veterans buried at Eastside Memorial Park on Friday in preparation for Memorial Day.

Coordinated by the cemetery and the Tahoe-Douglas Elks, the placement is scheduled for 8:30 a.m.

Veterans graves at the Garden and Genoa cemeteries will be decorated, as well.

Eastside is planning an observance 11 a.m. Monday of the federal holiday established to honor and mourn military service members who’ve died in the line of duty.

Disabled American Veterans Carson City Chapter 7 will coordinate the placing of flags in the graves of our departed veterans. Join us on Friday at 4 p.m at Lone Mountain Cemetery, 1044 Beverly Drive. Wear mask and gloves. DAV will place the flags out on tables in bundles. There are more than 1,700 flags to be placed.

DAV will be removing the flags at 4 p.m. on Monday.

A veterans appreciation barbecue is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at High Sierra Fellowship.

Reach for Joy, a community service organization, will host the barbecue for veterans and their spouses or friends. They’ll be serving tri-tip, coleslaw, beans and rolls, along with frozen yogurt and pie from Yogurt Beach.

“This is a free event to thank our veterans,” organizers said.

Local, state and federal offices are closed Monday.
