Local roundup: Carson, Douglas softball teams play for high seed

The Carson High softball team set up a key showdown with arch rival Douglas by routing Damonte Ranch 11-1 on Thursday in Reno.

Carson improved to 14-4 in the Sierra League and is now tied with Douglas. The two teams will be playing for at least a top three seed from the Sierra League and possibly higher in today’s doubleheader that begins at 11 a.m. at CHS.

Against Damonte, Jailene Salciedo was the winning pitcher, pitching a complete game that was called after six innings due to the 10-run rule. Salciedo allowed one run on six hits and didn’t walk a batter over six innings.

Kassidy Cooley was struck by a pitch to force in a run as Carson took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. CHS added three runs in the sixth to take an 11-1 lead. Amaya Mendeguia and Camryn Quilling drove in runs during the rally.

CHS had 14 hits. Salciedo and Bella Kordonowy each had three hits and Cooley added two hits. Carson also didn’t commit an error and was led defensively by Kordonowy.

CHS 10, Damonte Ranch 0

Salciedo and Caydee Farnworth combined on a one-hit shutout for Carson in its win over Damonte on Tuesday at home.

Salciedo allowed no hits over four innings to pick up the win as she struck out one and walked none. Farnworth allowed Damonte’s only hit in pitching a scoreless fifth.

The Senators scored five runs in the third to take a 5-0 lead as Quilling led off the inning with a solo home run to make it 1-0 to begin the rally. Carson scored three runs in the fifth to take a 10-0 lead and win the game by the mercy rule.

CHS had 13 hits. Quilling, Salciedo, Kedra Luschar, Bella Kordonowy and Amaya Mendeguia all had two hits for Carson.

Oasis Academy 16, Dayton 10

Oasis Academy pulled away late for the win at Dayton on Tuesday. The Dust Devils actually outhit Oasis 11-7.

Aleea McGill-Howe hit a two-run home run in the first as Dayton took a 3-0 lead. Julie Rogacs hit a solo homer for Dayton in the fourth to tie the score 8-8. But Oasis answered with five runs in the fifth to take a 13-8 lead.

Dayton scored four runs in the third to take a 7-5 lead. Rogacs, McGill-Howe, Gabrielle Dickenson and Amanda Woitas all drove in a run during the inning.

Woitas and Rogacs each had three hits and McGill-Howe added two hits for the Dust Devils. At least four Dayton players stole two bases, led by Marissa Hein, who had three stolen bases. But Oasis also stole 10 bases in the game.

GOLF

CHS just misses qualifying

The Carson High boys golf team just missed qualifying for the Northern 4A Regionals but did have three golfers qualify as individuals in Zander Smokey, Lukas Taggart and Brandon Engels. The Northern 4A Regionals will be held this Monday and Tuesday at Wildcreek Golf Course in Sparks.

The final Sierra League Tournament was held on Tuesday at Reno’s Wolf Run. CHS finished third in the tournament to tie for third overall in the standings with Douglas. But Douglas will advance to regionals because it had a lower stroke average in league play, 357-359.

The top three teams advanced to regionals. Galena finished first overall and first on Tuesday while Manogue finished second overall and second on Tuesday.

On Tuesday Galena won with a 301 and was followed by Manogue (318), Carson (359) and Douglas (361). Carson played on Tuesday without Smokey but also received some outstanding efforts from other golfers, including Cole Warkentin, who finished ninth with an 84.

Also for CHS, Taggart was 10th with an 86, Engels fired a 105, Bradley Wiggins shot a 90 and Nate Conrad fired a 99.
