Local roundup: Carson High softball sweeps Wooster

The Carson High softball field had been a magical place for the Senators all season long. That magic continued for five innings on Thursday. But then the magic came to a crashing halt.

Manogue scored seven runs over the last three innings to overcome a 5-0 deficit on its way to a 7-5 win over the Senators in eight innings.

The Miners spoiled another valiant effort on the mound by Jailene Salciedo for Carson. Salciedo ended up allowing five earned runs while scattering 14 hits over eight innings. She struck out five and walked just one.

“Jailene did everything she needed to do to win the game,” Carson coach Carlos Mendeguia said. “We just need to learn how to close out games. We had that game won.”

Carson rebounded in a big way on Friday, sweeping a doubleheader at Wooster, winning the opener 18-2 and the nightcap 15-0 to improve to 12-4 in the Northern 4A.

On Thursday, Manogue took advantage of Carson’s only error on the day to score two unearned runs in the sixth to pull to within 5-2. Manogue closed to within 5-3 in the seventh and had runners at first and second with no outs when the magic appeared to return for Carson.

Manogue closed to within 5-4 on an RBI double but the throw from the outfield sailed all the way to the backstop behind home plate. When the Manogue runner from first who had held up at third tried to score, Salciedo, who was backing up, threw to her catcher, Alex Salciedo, to nail the runner at the plate. But the Miners tied the game 5-5 on an RBI double.

Manogue took a 7-5 lead in the eighth on a double, RBI single and an RBI bloop single.

Up until the sixth, the magic continued for CHS when it scored two runs on a routine groundball to short to take a 5-0 lead. Lauren Hawkins walked and Kailee Luschar singled and both moved up to second and third on a wild pitch.

Kedra Luschar followed by hitting a grounder to third. Hawkins beat the throw home to score. Kedra Luschar then got into a rundown between first and second. Kedra beat the throw to second, with Kailee breaking for the plate from third and she beat the throw home to make it 5-0.

The Senators took a 1-0 lead in the first when Kailee Luschar walked, advanced on Bella Kordonowy’s sacrifice and scored on Salciedo’s single.

In the second, Kassidy Cooley walked and Caydee Farnworth followed with a bunt single. Shannen VonDuering followed with a sacrifice bunt, and then on an 0-2 pitch, Hawkins put the ball in play, allowing Cooley to score on a fielder’s choice to give CHS a 2-0 lead.

Farnworth’s homer to right center field gave Carson a 3-0 lead in the fourth.

Cooley had three hits, Farnworth had two hits and Hawkins added a hit for the Senators.

CHS 18, Wooster 2

Carson scored seven runs in the first and nine runs in the sixth on its way to taking an 18-0 lead. Salciedo had three hits and five RBI with two homers. She hit a two-run home run in the first and in the sixth hit another two-run homer and added an RBI single.

Kedra Luschar also homered and tripled and had four hits for CHS while Amaya Mendeguia had three doubles. Also for the Senators, Kordonowy had two hits and four RBI, Cooley had two hits, Alex Salciedo doubled and Kailee Luschar and Farnworth each added a hit as Carson banged out 17 hits.

Farnworth pitched a complete game for the win, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out nine over six innings.

CHS 15, Wooster 0

Jailene Salciedo hit another home run and had two more hits and three RBI in the game that was called after three innings due to the 15-run rule. Salciedo hit a two-run shot as Carson took a 4-0 lead in the first. The Senators added 11 runs in the third.

Also for CHS, Cooley went 3-for-3 with a double, Kailee Luschar and VonDuering each had two hits, Farnworth doubled and Kordonowy and Mendeguia each added a hit as Carson had 12 hits.

VonDuering was the winning pitcher as she allowed one hit and struck out five over three innings.

Dayton 12, South Tahoe 0

Caleigh Onstott went 3-for-4 and allowed just one hit over five innings on the mound as Dayton rolled to the win on Tuesday. Also for the Dust Devils, Amanda Woitas and Julie Rogacs each had two hits and Aleea McGill-Howe, Elizabeth Vincent, Shaye Thompson and Marissa Hein all added a hit.

BASEBALL

CHS beats Wooster

Casey Martensen had two hits and four RBI as Carson came back to beat Wooster 6-3 on Thursday at Ron McNutt Field. Wooster scored two unearned runs in the top of the first before Martensen answered with an RBI single to bring CHS to within 2-1 in the bottom of the first.

Martensen’s two-run double gave Carson a 3-2 lead in the third. He was also hit by a pitch to force in a run as the Senators scored three runs in the sixth to take a 6-2 lead.

Winning pitcher Justin Nussbaumer didn’t allow an earned run while striking out six over 4 1/3 innings for CHS. Max Fontaine got the last two outs to pick of the save for Carson, striking out one. Nussbaumer and Jade Stotts each added a hit for the Senators.

On Tuesday at Ron McNutt Field, Spanish Springs banged out 16 hits on its way to a 16-4 win over Carson.

The Cougars broke the game open when they scored nine runs in the third inning to take a 15-0 lead. Carson scored three runs in the bottom of the third, with singles by Kahle Good and Garritt Benavidez sparking the rally. Benavidez went 2-for-3 for the Senators.

GOLF

CHS falls to fourth

The Carson High golf team fell into fourth place in the Sierra League standings after a fourth place finish in the league tournament on Tuesday at Genoa.

Galena won the tournament with a 290 and was followed by Manogue (327), Douglas (348) and Carson (364). In the overall standings, Galena is first, Manogue is second, Douglas third and CHS fourth. Douglas has 18 points while Carson has 17 points.

On Tuesday, Zander Smokey finished in a tie for 10th as he shot an 85. Also for the Senators, Lukas Taggart fired an 87, Daniel Escalante had a98, Brandon Engels shot a 97, Nick Brown had a 95 and Cole Warkentin added a 99.
