Prep Roundup: Moyle strikes out all nine he faces in Carson High win

Bryce Moyle pitched three perfect innings and hit a homer, and the Carson Senators scored in every inning en route to a 16-1 win over Hug Tuesday night at Ron McNutt Field.

The teams meet again Thursday at 3:45 p.m. at Hug. Jared Barnard is expected to take the hill for the Senators. The game was stopped after four innings because of the new 15-run rule installed by the NIAA this year.

Moyle struck out all nine batters he faced and threw only 33 pitches in what amounted to a bullpen session. Colby Zemp threw the fourth inning, allowing the Hawks’ only run.

“We got almost everybody in, and the guys that came off the bench did a good job,” Carson coach Bryan Manoukian said after the victory. “Hug is better than they have been the last couple of years. If they had picked up a couple of those groundballs we don’t score as much.”

Manoukian said his team has played up or down to the level of the team it’s playing, and he wants to see a more consistent effort no matter the opponent.

Carson scored twice in the first thanks to a run-scoring single by Jace Keema and a sacrifice fly by Colby Zemp. The Senators made it 7-0 after two thanks to a two-run single by Barnard, a sacrifice fly by Edis and run-scoring singles by Good and Carter.

For good measure, Carson added five in the third and four in the fourth.

Eleven Carson players had hits, and Kellen McDermott, Zemp and Reese White had doubles.

Dayton tramples Vikings

DAYTON — Trevor Burrows threw a 2-hit shutout and homered, and Jesse Schmidt also homered to lead the Dust Devils to a 13-0 win over South Tahoe Tuesday afternoon.

Burrows struck out eight and walked two in his six innings of work. The game was called after six because of the 10-run rule. “We are playing with a lot of confidence right now,” Dayton coach Mike Burrows said.

“It is rewarding to see all the work these guys have put in translate into wins. We just to continue with the process of constant improvement and continue to get better each day.”

Jesse Schmidt gave the Dust Devils a 2-0 lead with a two-run homer in the first. Dayton added another run when Justin Schmidt drove home Dylan Baker, who had reached on an error.

After scoring one in the second on a passed ball, the Dust Devils put it out of reach with four in the fourth thanks to two errors, a double by Cole Purdy, a hit batsman, singles by Nick Hein and Zach Woitas and a sacrifice fly by Justin Schmidt. Dayton added six in the bottom of the sixth when Trevor Burrows hit a two-run homer and Woitas hit a two-run triple. Burrows, Justin Schmidt, Hein, Woitas and Purdy all finished with two hits

Douglas edges Reed

SPARKS — The Douglas Tigers started fast and then held on to secure an 8-6 Northern 4A win against Reed on Tuesday at Lee Mitchell Field.

Douglas took a 5-0 lead in the third inning and Haydn Brown’s homer extended the lead to 8-4 then Douglas held on for an important win on a day when the Tigers only collected four hits.

Douglas improved its conference record to 4-3 (7-5 overall). Reed dropped to 3-4 in conference (6-11 overall).

Hunter Simpson pitched six-plus innings before he departed when Jon Pinto led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a home run to center field to make it 8-6.

SOFTBALL

Reed overpowers CHS

SPARKS — Carson took a 1-0 lead in the first, but Reed scored seven unanswered runs en route to a 9-2 victory over the Senators Tuesday afternoon in a make-up game. Jailene Salceido doubled to lead the Senators to an early score, and Kailee Luschar hit a solo homer in the sixth to account for Carson’s final run.

Julia Jensen threw 6.2 innings for Reed, allowing six hits and striking out 14.

Allie Hughes homered in the third and Jensen homered in the fifth. Jillian Kygar went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs.

Luschar and Salceido had two hits each for Carson, and Bella Kordonowy and Lauren Lemburg added one each.

GOLF

Carson takes third

Carson, led by Lakoda Smokey’s 78, placed third with a 438 at Tuesday’s Sierra League tourney at Eagle Valley-West.

Galena won the event with a 373 followed by Manogue at 378 and Carson. Damonte Ranch was fourth with a 455 followed by Wooster and Douglas.

Bebop Martinez (84) and Taylor Saarem (86) played well. Ethan Lepire and Ty Evans shot 94 and 96, respectively.

“We had a good day today,” coach Wade Greenlee said. “We were 10 shots better than our last tournament and Eagle Valley-West is a harder track. Of course it made a difference playing our home course. It was certainly nice to see Lakoda stay in the 70s. He had a tough front nine, but came back and shot even par on the back.

“Bebop had a bad knee, but limped around the course and still shot 84. I was especially pleased to see Taylor play well and shot one of his lower scores.”

Carson returns to action next Tuesday at Genoa’s Ranch course.
