Prep Roundup: Dayton’s Ply clears 6-10 at Reed

SPARKS — J.J. Ply continued his domination in the high jump Saturday at the annual Reed Sparks Rotary Invitational.

Ply cleared 6-feet 10-inches for the second time this year, winning the event handily. Ply and Carson Crosby, who finished fifth in the 400 with a PR of 52.42, were the only highlights for the Dayton boys, who finished in 18th place with 14 points.

The Dayton girls were 13th with 19 points.

Kassi Strong was third in the discus with a season best of 103-10, and Ashley Mason was fourth in the triple jump with a PR of 32-10 and she was 10th in the long jump with a mark of 14-7 1/2. Rebecca Mason teamed with her sister, Ashley, Macie Callan and Sydney Strickler to finish fourth in the 800 relay with a 1:52.50. The Masons, Strickler and Grace Wells finished sixth in the 1600 relay with a 4:25.80.

The Carson boys varsity finished 10th with 22 points and the varsity girls were sixth with 39 points. The frosh-soph boys took third with 91 points.

Dylan Mayo led the CHS boys with a 44.4 time in the 300 hurdles, a second-place finish in the triple jump at 44-4, a season best mark, and a fourth-place finish in the long jump at 20-4. Harry Meyer was seventh in the 110 hurdles with a 16.74 and eighth in the 300 hurdles with a 43.80. Meyer teamed with Darryll Heyward, Chance Smith and Ben Granados to finish sixth in the 800 relay in 1:36.67. Gabe Gabica was eighth in the pole vault with a PR of 11-feet.

Abby Pradere was second in the 400 meters with a PR of 61.36, edging out Valerie Sue Meyer by .39. Abigail Cowan, Annika Wick, Meyer and Erica Basa placed third in the 800 relay with a 1:52.50. Pradere, Hannah Kaiser, Rheanna Jackson and Gabriella Fernandez placed second in the 3200 relay, clocking a 10:20.84. Ku’ulei Haupu was fourth in the high jump with a PR of 4-10, and she was 10th in the triple jump with a PR of 31-4 1/2. Anya Woodbury was fifth in the triple jump with a PR of 32-10. Fernandez placed seventh in the 3200 with a PR of 5:31.95. Ashley Britt was 11th in the 300 hurdles with a season-best of 50.83.

Trinity Medina won the frosh-soph 800 in a personal best of 2:09.48 and he took second in the 1600. Zach Sever was fifth in the 3200 (10:57) and Cody Main was second in the 300 hurdles (43.74) and fifth in the 110 hurdles (17.67).

SOFTBALL

Carson girls lose two

SPARKS — The Senators concluded the Reed Easter event with a 13-2 loss to Reed and a 7-5 loss to McQueen on Saturday at Shadow Mountain Softball Complex.

Reed broke open a 4-2 game with nine runs in the bottom of the fourth. Aliya Lange and Julia Jensen combined on a 6-hitter in the circle.

Jensen enjoyed a big day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with five RBI, and Carla Hernandez also went 4-for-4. Shelby Marquardt went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI.

Nicole Brown went 2-for-2 and drove in both Carson runs. Lauren Lemburg, Kailee Luschar, Bella Kordonowy and Camryn Quilling all had a hit apiece.

McQueen got homers from Rylie Miller, Ana Zimmerman and Hope Wood was enough to overcome the Senators.

Carson, after scoring single runs in the first and second, got three in the third when Kassidy Cooley doubled home two runs and Lemburg plated the third run with a double.

Quilling, Faith Bigelow, Cooley and Luschar all hit safely for the Senators.

The Senators host North Valleys on Thursday at 3:45 p.m.

Fernley sweeps Dayton

DAYTON — Fernley swept Dayton, 23-7 and 14-0, Saturday afternoon in 3A action.

Aleea Howe and Julie Rogacs were the bright spots in the opener. Rogacs went 3-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. Howe went 2-for-2 with a homer, single, two RBI and two runs scored. Tamia Powell added a single.

In the second game, Rogacs, Caleigh Onstott and Bri Hill all had a hit apiece.

BASEBALL

Senators top DeAnza

EL SOBRANTE, Calif. — The Senators scored five runs in the first two innings, and made those early outbursts hold up for a 9-6 nonleague win over DeAnza on Saturday morning.

The Senators scored two in the first when Landon Truesdale was plunked by a pitch, moved to third on a throwing error by the pitcher and scored on a single by Abel Carter. After Carter stole second, Jace Keema grounded out and Trevor Edis scored Carter with a single. Carson tacked on three more in the second, with Carter picking up an RBI single. After scoring one in the third, DeAnza cut the deficit o 6-4 with four in the bottom of the fourth. Carson scored twice in the fifth and once in the seventh.

Carter, Kahle Good, Brandon Gagnon and Colby Zemp all had two hits for the Senators.

Ben Nelson went four innings to pick up the win. Reese White pitched two innings in relief.

“Today was good,” Carson coach Bryan Manoukian said. “We got a win and we got almost everybody on the team in. It was a real team effort. The trip showed that we can play with really good teams and put ourselves in a position to win. It also showed us that we need to focus more against lesser teams and average pitching so we do not lose to teams that we are better than.

“We did a much better job of that today than yesterday and came away with a much needed win.”

Carson hosts Hug on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Dayton sweeps Fernley

DAYTON — The Dust Devils continued their stellar play by sweeping Fernley, 7-1 and 14-2, on Saturday.

Fernley managed just five total hits in the doubleheader thanks to the efforts of Dylan Baker and Isaac Von Schoff.

In the opener, Baker struck out seven and allowed just three hits in picking up the win. The only blemish was an unearned run in the fourth inning,

Dayton scored four in the second thanks to a two-run single by C.J. Wilhite, a run-scoring double by Jesse Schmidt and an error. Schmidt hit a solo homer in the fifth to make it 5-1, and the Dust Devils added two in the sixth for good measure.

Trevor Burrows led the offense with three hits and Schmidt added two plus three RBI. Justin Schmidt and Jake Madson had a hit apiece.

In the nightcap, Dayton scored 13 of its runs in the first three innings. The game was called after 4 1/2 innings on the 10-run rule.

The first six hitters reached base in the seven-run second, four on hits by Jake Madson, Zach Woitas, Max Madson and Burrows. The Dust Devils also cashed in on two errors and a hit batsman. Jesse Schmidt keyed the five-run third with a two-run homer.

Von Schoff allowed two runs and two hits while striking out three and walking four.

Jesse Schmidt had three hits and Justin Schmidt had two.

“Our pitching set the tone from the start,” coach Mike Burrows said. “Dylan had great command of all of his pitches, and he was able to keep the ball down. We had good approaches at the plate and kept the ptressure on all day. We are playing good baseball right now, and we need to keep the momentum going.”

South Tahoe visits Dayton on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
