Community spotlight: Cockerills grab tourney win at Thunder Canyon

Charlie and Kathy Cockerill teamed up to shoot a net 61 to win the Thunder Canyon Country Club’s Partners’ Better Ball-Shamble event on March 15.

Tom Ridgway and Gayle Block, and Jeff Gussow with a blind draw, tied for second with a 62. Dave and Shirley Westfall and Andrew Sels and Robert Tinnin tied for fourth with 64s.

There was a seven-way tie for sixth place at 64.

Swann, Flamer win

Empire Ranch event

Geoff Swann and George Flamer won via tiebreaker over Norm Scoggin and Bill Gibson to win A flight at the first Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Club event of the season. The format was best ball for two-man teams.

Nick Paul and Duanne Carroll were third with a 58. Ray McPartlin and Phil Polaske won B flight with a 54, while Ray Huntley and Nils Sharpe finished second at 55. They won via tiebreaker over Dennis Small and Tony Dolce.

Prause, Smitreski

win at CVGC

Marc Prause and Ken Smitreski teamed up for a 60 to win A flight at Carson Valley Men’s Club two-man scramble event on March 15.

Richard Torok and Fred Coons were second by two shots. In B flight, David Morris and Bill Allen won with a 64 while Dennis Patterson and Don Henderson were second with a 65. Gerry Bing and John Carey won C flight with a 68. Gary Carsten and Bruce Sandford also shot 68 but lost on a tiebreaker.

Women’s club at Silver

Oak seeks members

The Silver Oak Women’s Golf Club begins its season on April 16 with a breakfast buffet at 8 a.m. followed by a round of golf.

Golfers 18 and over are invited to join. The club plays every Thursday mornings until mid-October. Membership dues are $65 which covers handicap dues, hole-in-one fund and year-end awards. In addition to greens fees of $30 until May 1 and $35 thereafter, a $5 buy-in is required to play in the weekly tournament.
