Community spotlight: Red-hot Hauck wins twice at Carson City’s Silver Oak

Cory Hauck is on fire.

Hauck has won or shared the Flight 1 title in each of the last two Silver Oak Men’s Club tournaments.

On July 5, Hauck shot a net 66 to tie for first place with James Shabi, and on July 12 he shot a gross 72 and a net 64 to edge Adam Koehm by a single shot.

Manny Lopez and Bill Kapczynski tied for the Flight 2 title with 68s, a shot better than Bert Wells.

Eric Ottenheimer, Jim Silsby, Lee Plemel and Osu Kwon tied for third in Flight 1 on July 5 with 67s. Joe Paden and John Carey won Flight 2 on July 5 with 66s. Jeff Cloutier, Kyle Menath and Vern Payette tied for third with 68s. On July 12, Don Fox and Jordan Payette tied for fourth with 70s.

• On June 28, Ottenheimer shot a net 64 from the tips to win the men’s club event. Jim Silsby was second at 67 and John Meyer was third with a 68. Bill Prowse and Payette tied for the Flight 2 title with 68s, three strokes better than Frank Turek and Paden.

Signups set for

Western Nevada event

More than 150 golfers are expected to compete in the 16th annual Western Nevada College Golf Classic at Silver Oak on Sept. 18.

Proceeds from the event, hosted by the WNC Foundation, will benefit academic programs at the school. The funds are earmarked for Jump Start College and Applied Industrial Technology programs.

Registration and sponsorships are being accepted until Sept. 8.

Burke quartet wins

at Thunder Canyon

The team of Don Burke Sr., Don Burke Jr., Carl Overmier and Cheryl Burke shot 125 to win the Independence Day Variable Best Ball Shamble event at Thunder Canyon on July 5.

Jack and Virginia Bonar, Mike Judge and Deb Jones shot 129, while Jim and Elaine Colgan, and Mike and Donna Schellin were third at 130. Charlie and Kathy Cockerill and Dave and Brooke Nielsen were fourth at 131.

Poe and Sparman win

at Carson Valley

Charles Poe and Jack Sparman scored 15 points to win the Carson Valley Golf Club’s 2-man Stableford tournament on July 12.

Second place in Flight A went to Jeff and Gary Schreiber with a 13. Dayle Lewis and Marc Menezes finished with 10 points.

Evan Evans and Doug Nelson won Flight B with 22 points, 12 ahead of Jason Martin and Pete Rogney. Roger Hala and Bob Van Nort won Flight C with 22 points, three ahead of Jack Zippwald and Neil Bain.

Gibson wins top

Bill Gibson shot 65 to win A flight at Empire Ranch’s weekly stroke play tournament. John Hauck also shot 65, but was second. Geoff Swann was third with a 66.

Dahl Rask won B flight with a 60, four shots better than Mike Rogers and five better than Ray Huntley. Dennis Small won C flight with a 66. Kurt Cleek also had 66, but lost via tiebreaker. Melvin Ness was third with a 67. Fred Blackburn won D flight with a 65, a shot better than Tom Harlow and two better than Jim Watt, Greg Bentley and Marshall McCurdy.

Compass tennis event

set for July 25

The Carson Tennis Club is accepting registration for its annual Compass Tournament at Centennial Park.

There will be mixed doubles, men’s and women’s doubles, men’s singles and women’s singles. The cost is $25 for doubles teams with one or two CTC members and $30 for non-member teams. Cost is $15 for CTC singles and $20 for non-members.

You need to register by July 17 to save a spot.

Eagle Valley women

host tournament

The Eagle Valley Women’s Club is holding its Wild, Wild West tournament on July 29 at Eagle Valley-East.

The format is two-person best ball with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. You can sign up as a two person team or get a foursome together.

Entry fee of $75 includes greens fee, continental breakfast, luncheon buffet, prize fund and raffle ticket poker hand contest.

WildCats win tourney

in Elk Grove

The Nevada WildCats 18-u fast-pitch softball squad went 4-0-1 to win the Elk Grove Summer Smash over the weekend.

The locals went 2-0-1 in pool play on Saturday and then went 2-0 on Sunday to win the tournament.

The WildCats beat Elk Grove 9-4 in the semis, a team that tied them 1-1 on Saturday. The WildCats beat the Bomb Squad in the championship game. The score was not reported.

Paige Thorn went 8-for-18 with six RBI and Taylor Caulk went 7-for-13 with six RBI to lead the offense. Bailey Henderson went 5-for-13, Bailey Barcellos went 6-for-14 and Britini Geringer went 6 for 11.

Thorn and Barcellos made great defensive plays in the title contest.
