The R-C Morning Report

We're supposed to hear this morning from a spokesman for the Matlean family about the homicide charges faced by James Matlean, who is due to appear in East Fork Justice Court in a few hours. Matlean is being held in Douglas County Jail, accused in the 2008 shotgun murder of Benjamin Oxley, ex-husband to Matlean's former roommate.

Carson Valley Days celebrations in Lampe Park start with the carnival at 3 p.m., a barbecue at 6 p.m., music through the day and fireworks at 10 p.m. The revels at the park will continue until 11 p.m. Meanwhile, across town, Buckaroo's and The French will be hosting their annual celebration featuring The Rustlers starting at 8 p.m. With all the other things to do, hopefully the desire to stand by the side of Highway 395 tonight will be somewhat diminished.

I had to take one last longing look at the snowpack report. Ebbetts Pass has 3.7 inches of moisture, 38 percent of the average 9.7 inches for this time of year. Carson Pass still has 11.3 inches, and Blue Lakes has 16.8 inches, which is about 140 percent average. You can tell by looking that Jobs Peak has been doffing some of its white raiment for summer.

It's cool out, but no quite as cool as previously forecast. It was 47 degrees out earlier this morning, probably thanks to the cloud cover. Expect mostly sunny skies today with a high of 66. According to the weather graph, it will be about 50 degrees out when the fireworks go off tonight. Expect 45 degrees 7 a.m. Saturday when the road closes for the parade, warming to 68 degrees by noon when it wraps up.
