Frosty morning today

Valley residents awoke to a frosting of snow this morning and some road controls at the higher elevations. Four-wheel drive or chains are being required over Highway 88 from Carson Pass all the way to the Ham's Station. Chains or four-wheel drive are also being required from Pickett's Junction in Hope Valley over Echo Summit on Highway 50.

Snow fell in Carson Valley starting about 10:30 p.m. on Friday night. The total wasn't more than a half inch, but it froze overnight. The temperature dropped below freezing overnight.

The snow depth went up an inch at Ebbetts Pass to 53 inches, according to Natural Resource Conservation Service telemetry. Snowpack at the head of the Carson River remains steady at 126 percent.

The National Weather Service is calling for a slight chance of snow showers after 11 a.m. today, with the possibility of thunder. Expect the wind to pick up to 15 mph with gusts of up to 25 mph. The high today is expected not to quite crack 50 degrees. Tonight there's a 40 percent chance of rain and snow before 11 p.m. It's sunny out this morning, but cold, with the temperature 32 degrees in Genoa, 33 degrees in Minden and 36 degrees in the Gardnerville Ranchos.
