'Hotel Minden' comes to museum

The Douglas County Historical Society's upcoming melodrama, "Hotel Minden," is Feb. 6-8. Did you know that melodrama has its own vocabulary? The intermission between the acts is not called intermission if it features musical entertainment. It is called an "olio" as in miscellaneous songs and variety acts. Olio means a miscellaneous mixture, a hodgepodge.

"Hotel Minden" will feature an olio between its two acts. Sheri Kern will be our performer. Sheri is a fifth-generation Carson Valley resident and is the sister of Laurie Hickey, DCHS board member among other things. Sheri will sing, play the guitar and keep us all entertained. Her beautiful voice should not be missed.

The Friday and Saturday performances are sold out but tickets are still available for the 1 p.m. Sunday matinee with a hot dog lunch. The cost for Sunday is $15 per person. Doors open for seating 30 minutes early and a no-host beverage bar is available. Go in to the Gardnerville museum or call 782-2555 to charge tickets to your credit card.

In spite of the melodrama, there are other things going on. One is the January photo contest. Your task is to find something that reminds us of January in Douglas County , take a photo of it and submit it to the contest before 4 p.m. Jan. 31. The contest is going on even though there has been no snow to photograph. The winner will be announced in the Feb. 6 column.

The Main Street Bookstore sale is still in progress. All items in the store are 20 percent off the marked price until Jan. 31. Now is your chance to pick up some of the books featured in our lecture series at a great price. Other items include T-shirts, sweat shirts and great items for kids.

If you have any questions about anything mentioned here, please call the Douglas County Historical Society at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Visit our Web site at www.historicnevada.org. Remember, DCHS and its two museums, the Gardnerville museum and the Genoa Court House Museum, do not receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
