New historical society contest begins

Today we start a new contest. Before we ask the question, here are the few simple rules. Anyone can enter; there is no age limit. The winner must come into the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville and give the correct answer to the docent at the front desk. The first person with the correct answer will receive a prize. And, finally, no phone calls please. The question: Who was the first licensed woman doctor in Nevada?

Photographers have until Saturday to enter the Douglas County Historical Society's February photo contest. Bring photos to the museum before 4 p.m. or e-mail them to the address below. The winners of both contests will be announced next week.

If you love the Olympics, don't miss the chance to see a timely exhibit at the museum. Bill Baltz, pastor of Christ Presbyterian Church in Gardnerville, has graciously donated his collection of Olympic pins and memorabilia, which is displayed in the changing exhibit room for a short time.

The deadline for entering your choice for Women in History is Thursday. Nomination packets are available at 782-2555 or by calling Helen Chappell at 721-7979. The reception honoring the ladies is March 20 at the museum.

Student Senior Day on March 6 features an encore performance of our reading play, "Portrait of a Pioneer Lady," in memory of co-writer Bea Fettic Jones who passed away recently. We hope to replay some of last year's interview with Bea before the 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. performances. Admission for all students and seniors is free.

This month's lecture on March 11 features State Archivist Jeff Kintop who discusses "Where the Heck is Old Mormon Station?" It seems the original Mormon Station may well have been exactly where the current Mormon Station State Historical Park is in Genoa. Come learn all about this important part of our Douglas County history.

Photos for the March photo contest are due March 31. Winning photo will be in next year's DCHS calendar.

For questions, contact the Douglas County Historical Society at www.historicnevada.org or at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in Gardnerville at 782-2555. Remember, DCHS and its two museums in Gardnerville and Genoa don't receive any regular state or county funding. It's up to our members and friends to help us keep our doors open.
